Five dead after heavy rain causes floods, landslide in northern Japan
日本北部暴雨導致洪水泥石流
Five people are dead after torrential rain hit northern Japan, triggering flooding and landslides. The meterological agency has issued evacuation warnings and asked residents to take "immediate action" to protect their lives. The Iwate local government has asked Japanese troops to assist in emergency operations. On Friday, here in Akita prefecture, three people were killed, when their houses were swept away by massive floods. Two residents are still unaccounted for and a search operation is underway to try to locate them.

Vietnam media says men found in jungle after 40 years
越南父子躲越戰 叢林生活40年
According to local media reports, Ho Van Lang was two-years-old when a mine exploded killing his mother and brothers. In fear, his father Ho Van Thanh, seen here in the hammock, allegedly fled with Lang to a remote jungle. That was during the Vietnam war 40 years ago. The two men had apparently survived without contact with the outside world. They were found living in this treehouse....and know few words of the local dialect. Wearing loin clothes made out of tree bark, they ate wild rice and foraged for fruit and vegetables. Reports said villagers raised the alarm after spotting two "jungle men". Thanh and Lang are now having medical checkups, the first stage of being slowly reintegrated into society.

Philippine oil spill threatens livelihoods

A dead fish floats in Manila Bay as a large oil spill in the area continues to spread. The Philippine Coast Guard estimated about half a million liters of diesel fuel has leaked into the bay from a broken underground pipeline since Thursday. Authorities have imposed a ban on fishing because of health risks, threatening the livelihoods of many near the coastal villages of Cavite Province.

Some out-of-work fishermen have been making money out of the spilled diesel oil by scooping it near the shoreline and placing it in barrels. The Coast Guard has promised a clean-up and full investigation into the leak, which fishing chiefs say will evaporate in 8-10 days. Petron Corporation, the oil company responsible for the leak said on Friday it was cooperating with authorities to resolve the issue immediately.
