Beijing gives rooftop villa owner two-week demolition deadline

Swanky villa? ... Or an illegal building project? For some in Beijing's Haidian District, it's the latter. After several months of complaints, officials are ordering the resident of a rooftop villa made of imitation rocks and plants to de- construct the private add-on property. District official Chen Yu says the resident has 15 days to take it down or face demolition.

If Beijing experiences bad or extreme weather, it could be blown down or hit by lightning. More importantly, it has infringed the rights of other residents who disliked having a building constructed on their rooftop." The 8,600-square-foot villa features a pavilion and a surveillance camera on the premises. One resident who lives on the 22nd floor says she's worried about the extra weight.
海淀區行政與執法副大隊長陳宇表示：“首先，這棟樓頂別墅影響到安全。如果北京遭遇糟糕或極端天氣，別墅會垮塌或者被雷擊。更重要的是侵犯了其他居民的權益。居民們不喜歡自己的屋頂上有這樣的建筑。”這棟面積8,600英尺的奢華別墅設有涼亭和攝像頭。住在22樓的一位業主表示，她擔心地基承載的壓力過大。

Perhaps originally it was designed to withstand a certain weight, but now he has added so many things, it's not a question of a blade of grass. I also heard that there are big rocks and a big house up there. If it collapses, nobody knows how many casualties it would cause."

Meanwhile, the structure has attracted other residents to take a look for themselves. (soundbite) (Mandarin) 67-year-old Beijing resident Chen Zhumin saying: "I've no idea about how it was constructed or designed, but viewed from the outside, I think it's beautification. When we travel abroad, there are green plants on the rooftops of houses. So it plays a role in beautifying the city." The resident has until August 27 to comply.

Al-Natsheh was imprisoned in 1992 for killing an Israeli army reservist guarding a site in Hebron. Son Asem in the West Bank says he is excited about the return of a father he barely knows.

Al-Natsheh is one of 26 prisoners expected to be released by Israel on Wednesday, as negotiators resume long-stalled Middle East peace talks. Hamas welcomed the prisoners' release but reiterated its objections to negotiating with Israel, whose existence it rejects. In the West Bank town of Ramallah, meanwhile, families of other prisoners held their weekly demonstration, calling for the release of their relatives. Many Palestinians imprisoned before the 1993 Oslo peace agreement remain in jail.

Iraq hit by new wave of bloodshed

At least 16 people were killed by a suicide bomber at what was a crowded cafe in the Iraqi city of Balad. More than 40 more were wounded in the attack on Monday. The city's mayor said all the casualties were civilians. As residents cleared the debris and security forces inspected the scale of the devastation other attacks were taking place elsewhere in Iraq the same day. Two roadside bombs near a playground and a school in the town of Muqdadiya killed six more people and wounded dozens,some of them children. In the city of Mosul three soldiers on their way to join their unit were shot dead by gunmen who intercepted their car. It wasn't immediately clear who was behind the latest wave of bloodshed. The main suspect is a group calling itself the State of Iraq and the Levant formed this year though a merger of al Qaeda's affiliates in Iraq and Syria.
