Fires, floods and droughts plaguing U.S.

Wildfires in California… drought in Texas… and floods in Tennessee. People across the US are seeing a variety of weather events that have many fleeing their homes. Dry conditions in southern California have fueled a wildfire that has destroyed more than 10,000 acres of land. About 500 homes in half a dozen small communities are under mandatory evacuation. Gusty winds are pushing the blaze farther east. Meanwhile, Texas is experiencing its third straight year of drought. The reservoirs that supply central Texas are running low and officials fear it could be the state's worst drought in history. Northeast of Texas, residents of Tennessee have too much water on their hands. Flash floods are drowning cars, streets and homes due to heavy rainfall. Dozens of residents stranded by the floodwaters have been rescued.

A candidate from Australia's One Nation Party has withdrawn from the federal election race after an interview gaffe went viral. Stephanie Banister said this when launching her campaign.

Assad's air force strikes northern Syria

Warplanes bomb the village of Salma in Northern Syria. Amateur video that could not be independently verified by Reuters -purports to show President Bashar al-Assad's air force working to defend the stronghold province of Latakia - from the threat of advancing rebels. Recently, rebel forces have made gains across northern Syria - while Assad's forces continue to control most of southern and central Syria. The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights group reported that about 20 people died in the air strikes on Salma - and several were injured. The United Nations has said more than 100,000 people have been killed in the now 28-month long conflict - and 1.7 million Syrians have been forced to flee to neighboring countries.
