Lawyer expects Egypt's Mubarak to be freed this week

Deposed Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak could be freed this week. That's according to his lawyer Fareed el-Deeb. He says a court will review his petition to release his client, now that the last remaining corruption charge against Mubarak has been dropped.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) LAWYER FOR EX-PRESIDENT HOSNI MUBARAK, FAREED DEEB SAYING: "The appeals court in northern Cairo, which specializes in appeals, will move to the prison where he is held and I will give my defense and if, God willing, there is a decision to release him, then there will be no reason for him to be held in temporary detention.'' Mubarak has been jailed on corruption charges following a 2011 revolution that removed him from power. He was also sentenced to life in prison last year for failing to stop the killing of protesters during the revolt against him. He still faces a retrial in that case but this wouldn't require him to stay in jail. Wednesday's court hearing will be at the same Cairo prison where the former President is being held.

U.S. Soldier Bradley Manning is expected to be sentenced on Wednesday morning. The 25 year old private first class could face up to 90 years in prison for giving hundreds of thousands of classified documents to WikiLeaks. Prosecutors are requesting 60 years, while the defense is asking the judge not to "rob him of his youth." The massive leak made headlines around the world. The classified files contained secret State Department cables and information about the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Manning had access to the classified documents while working as an intelligence analyst in Baghdad in 2010. He was convicted in July on 20 counts including espionage and theft.

Oil spill from sunken Philippine ferry threatens villages

An oil spill from a sunken ferry in the Philippines reaches nearby coastal villages, threatening the livelihood of residents. At least 52 people died when the ferry sank on Friday just outside the central port of Cebu following a collision with a cargo vessel. The oil spill has now reached Cordova town, some 3 kilometres from the impact site, affecting around 3,000 hectares of its coastal areas. This fishermen says no one will buy his fish fearing contaminated water due to the oil and dead bodies being recovered from the ferry. The Philippine Coastguard said they sent a team to contain the slick but strong waves were making the process difficult. Thirteen more bodies were recovered from the ferry on Monday, with 68 people still missing. Officials have temporarily suspended the search for missing passengers because of rough waves. Scores, sometimes hundreds of people die each year in ferry accidents in the Philippines, due to overcrowding and old or decrepit vessels.
