一.near：adj. 近的，近似的，親近的，吝嗇的 adv. 在附近，不久以后，幾乎，[罕]吝嗇地 v. 接近，靠近
【詞義辨析】
close, near, nearby,
close: 語(yǔ)氣強(qiáng)于near。指時(shí)間、地點(diǎn)或程度方面的接近，有緊靠、相鄰的意味。
near: 語(yǔ)氣弱于close，也指時(shí)間或空間上的接近，但無(wú)“緊接，接觸”的含義。
nearby: 指距離上很近，近在咫尺。
【例句用法】
1.I've nowhere near enough for the fare.
我的錢肯定不夠買車票的。
2.Luckily the van ahead of us skidded off the road on our left, but it was a very near miss.
我們前面的客貨車滑出我們左邊的路，僥幸沒(méi)撞上。
3.The job is at last nearing completion.

二.accident：n. 事故，意外，偶然，造化
【詞語(yǔ)用法】
1.accident常指偶然發(fā)生的不幸事件，incident則指不是非常重要的事件。如出車禍?zhǔn)莂ccident，在車上遇到長(zhǎng)時(shí)間未見(jiàn)到老朋友是incident；
2.accident單用時(shí)指“偶然”，而沒(méi)有“不幸”的意思。
She was twenty when accident brought her to the notice of the great author.
3.by accident意為“偶然地”，反義表達(dá)方式是by design或on purpose；
4.表達(dá)“某人某物遭遇不幸事件”時(shí)，加to在人或物前。
There was an accident to the little boy.
5.accident后偶爾接以that從句。
His absence was due to the accident that the letter asking him to come had gone astray.
6.有時(shí)意為“偶然成功的人或事”，如a political accident指“一個(gè)不靠本領(lǐng)而借偶然機(jī)會(huì)成功的政界人物”。
【詞義辨析】
accident, incident, event, occurrence, happening,
accident: 強(qiáng)調(diào)偶然或意外發(fā)生的不幸事情。
incident: 既可指小事件或附帶事件，又可指政治上具有影響的事件或事變。
event: 可指任何大小事件，但尤指歷史上的重大事件。
occurrence: 多指日常生活中發(fā)生的一般事件，有時(shí)也指偶然發(fā)生的事。
happening: 與occurrence相似，多指日常生活中發(fā)生的一般事件，有時(shí)也指偶然發(fā)生的事。
【例句用法】
1.Happily, the accident was prevented.
很幸運(yùn)，事故得以避免了。
2.He was all but killed by the traffic accident.
他幾乎死于車禍。
3.His left knee was hurt in a traffic accident.
他的左膝在一次交通事故中受傷了。
4.The accident was caused by human error.
這宗事故是人為過(guò)失造成的。
5.She was injured badly in the accident.
她在這次意外中受到重傷。
6.We got back without accident.

三.desperate：adj. 絕望的，不顧一切的，極其想要的
【詞語(yǔ)用法】
1.與hopeless相比，desperate的語(yǔ)氣要輕些。
The situation was desperate but not hopeless.
這個(gè)情形是令人絕望的，但也不全無(wú)希望。
2.desperate后可接不定式，表示“發(fā)瘋似地想要……”。
When the war was over, Tom was desperate to return to civilian life.
當(dāng)戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)結(jié)束的時(shí)候，湯姆發(fā)瘋似的想要回到平民的生活。
be desperate at ...屬于固定搭配，表示“因……而絕望”。
【錯(cuò)句舉例與錯(cuò)句分析】
錯(cuò)句：He is desperate for the failure.
