Brazilian officials hold Ebola readiness drills

The announcement went out over the loud speaker- a passenger suspected of having the Ebola virus has just landed at the international airport in Rio de Janeriro. Emergency workers don gloves, face masks, and protective gear and head to the site.

(sirens) This time, it's only a drill, but officials in Rio aren't taking any chances about what to do should a real emergency arise. Once onboard the plane, the infected passenger is led to a safe and protected environment where doctors can perform an examination. The West African Ebola outbreak has been declared a public health emergency. So far more than 1400 people have died in the latest outbreak. Although it's unlikely the disease will reach Brazil, officials say with contingency measures like these in place, they will at least be somewhat prepared if the worse does happen.

Ukraine's Poroshenko: "We are very close to the point of no return"

Amid a backdrop of fighting in eastern Ukraine between government forces and pro-Russian separatists... Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko, attending an EU summit in Brussels, says the EU has agreed to prepare new sanctions on Russia.

He warns that Ukraine is on the brink of a full-scale war.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) UKRAINIAN PRESIDENT PETRO POROSHENKO, SAYING (ACCORDING TO OFFICIAL TRANSLATION): "I think we are very close to the point of no return. The point of no return is full scale war, which already happened in the territory controlled by separatists and where - instead of separatists - there are regular Russian troops. And any offensive action, which would be undertaken, if it happened, would be the point of no return."

But Poroshenko says there's a chance that a ceasefire could be reached during a meeting on Monday, which is expected to include representatives from Moscow, Kiev, and the EU.

20 freed from mine in Nicaragua

Rescue workers in Nicaragua rescued 20 informal miners Friday after they became trapped by a landslide. Emergency teams carried some of the miners out on stretchers.... others were able to walk. Relatives of the trapped men watched excitedly as most of them were brought to safety. Of the 29 miners who were trapped, there are seven whose whereabouts are unknown. The head of the mine said it was closed four years ago after being deemed unsafe.... still artisanal miners continued working there against the company's orders.
