New York suburbs hit by flash floods after record rainfall
Major roads in the US are turned into rivers. Vehicles submerged up to their windows are abandoned in New York subways as the waters rise. Heavy rain dumped more than 30 cm of water across the Long Island, triggering flash floods. It's believed to be the most the area's ever seen in a 24 hour period.

The worst of it came during the morning rush hour, causing major problems for commuters. One traveller in New Jersey though refused to give up, pushing his car through waist deep muddy water. Many major routes and the Long Island Rail Road were forced to close because of flooding. At least one death was reported in Long Island. Flash floods also hit Nebraska. Here at the Good Smaritan Hospital it was a different kind of emergency from usual. Surveillance cameras capture the moment when floodwaters barrelled through the cafeteria, sending one worker scrambling to get out.

Ukrainian Army tanks in the eastern city of Uglegorsk; the national flag waving high. The army recaptured the town on Tuesday from pro-Russian separatists, and began to close in on the rebel stronghold of Dontesk, only a half hour's drive away. Residents of Uglegorsk say at least five civilians were killed in the operation.
(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) UGLEGORSK RESIDENT, SAYING: "There was a massive shooting. It seemed like there weren't many fighters, but the storming was horrid." And apart from the death toll, it left behind enormous damage.

As government forces tighten the noose on separatists, shelling hit the center of Donetsk for the first time in the conflict, killing one person. This, as a large Russian aid convoy rumbles towards the border, worrying the central government in Kiev. Ukraine is fearful the convoy could be a covert military intervention by Moscow to help the rebels -- just when they appear on the verge of defeat.
