295 dead after Malaysian Airlines jet crashes in Ukraine

A Malaysian airplane has crashed in eastern Ukraine, killing all 295 people aboard. A Ukrainian interior ministry official was quoted saying the plane was shot down by militants. Separatists are pointing the finger at Ukrainian government forces. The Boeing 777 came down near the rebel stronghold of Donetsk. The plane was heading from Amsterdam to Kuala Lumpur. Details are still emerging.

Obama reveals sanctions on Russia while pushing diplomacy elsewhere

New sanctions are on the way for Russia. Key institutions like Gazprombank and Rosneft Oil Co. are among a dozen companies hit in the latest round of sanctions. President Barack Obama announced the measures Wednesday over what his administration views as Moscow's interference in Ukraine.

In Damascus, President Bashar al Assad is sworn in for a new seven-year term.

Assad, who has managed to cling to power in the face of a three year-civil war, was at times, defiant. He warned western and Arab states that they'd pay a "high price" for supporting terrorism. He had this message for rebels.

Securing this area is a victory --- but one in a war where wins and losses are fluid.
