Germany parties as team wins world cup

German soccer fans celebrate as their team beats Argentina 1-0 to win the world cup. These were the scenes in Frankfurt in the early hours of monday morning, as an impromptu car rally made its way through the city.

Even a lone Argentine fan had no choice but to join in the celebrations. Here in Berlin thousands of fans packed into the Kurfürstendamm shopping street. This may be the fourth time the German team has brought the cup home, but it's their first in 24 years. And it's their first as a united Germany.

Anger on the streets of Buenos Aires after Argentina loses to Germany. Thousands of football fans had gathered here to celebrate their team's performance in the world cup final. But hope turned to bitter disappointment after their 1-0 defeat. Skirmishes broke out between riot police and youths. Police fired tear gas at the youths who threw rocks and tried to kick down shop fronts. Local media said fifteen police officers were wounded in the clashes, which continued for more than three hours after the final result. So far more than fifty people have been detained.

Israeli army tanks line up on the Gaza border Sunday. A ground war seems likely --- especially in the wake of reports that Israeli commandos conducted an overnight raid on Gaza. So far, at least 20,000 reservists have been mobilized. But despite intensified Israeli military action, Islamist Hamas continued to launch rockets on Israeli cities. In the Israeli city of Ashkelon, one teenager was seriously wounded after being hit with shrapnel in the head and chest.
