Thais stage candlelight protest against military rule
Hundreds of protesters gathered in this northeastern Thai city Chiang Mai, the hometown and base of the powerful Shinawatra family. Chanting "Get out" and "no to military" it's easy to see where their loyalties lie. This city is home to two former prime ministers, both of whom have been ousted from power. And they're are at the heart of the bitter power struggle between the populist government and the royalist establishment. Yingluck Shinawatra was removed as leader for abuse of power, and her brother Thaksin won huge support among the poor but was hated by rival political groups, for alleged corruption and nepotism. As these protesters took to the streets to condemn the army's seizure of power, Yingluck spent her first night in military custody. She was detained along with dozens of political figures on Friday as the coup leaders tightened their grip on power. The Thai military says it took control after failing to find a compromise to the political deadlock and restore law and order. But as these demonstrators march through town, the anger is simmering, a sign that opposition to the takeover could be gathering momentum.

(SOUNDBITE) (Arabic) SABAHI SUPPORTERS, ZIZO ABDOU, SAYING: "I think if there were real elections the stronger voice would be for Hamdeen Sabahi and he would overtake Abdel Fattah al-Sisi. However, in the current circumstances, we see that Abdel Fattah al-Sisi will arrive through false means."
The latest opinion polls show just over half of Egyptians approve of the former army chief. The Washington-based Pew Research Center poll also found that 43 percent opposed the army's overthrow of Mursi last july, a move for which the military claimed national backing.

Ukrainians are making final preparations for Sunday's presidential election -- three months after Moscow-backed president Viktor Yanukovich fled the capital in the face of a street uprising. Election officials are distributing polling cards to almost 34,000 polling stations across the country. Some 35.5 million people are eligible to vote.Contingency plans have been made for those in the east who may face disruptions from pro-Russian separatists -- and minority Tatars in Crimea.
SOUNDBITE (Ukrainian) OLEG KUPRIIYENKO, HEAD OF KIEV REGIONAL ELECTORAL COMMISSION, SAYING: "The people who live in the east and in Crimea and have no possibility for voting for whatever reasons -- and we all know what the reasons are -- they were given the opportunity to apply to the electoral authorities to change their place of voting and exercise their voting rights in any other place of their choice."
Opinion polls suggest confectionary magnate Petro Poroshenko will win the election, either in Sunday's first round or - if he fails to muster more than 50 percent of the vote -in a second round set for June 15. Polls show former Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko a distant second in the race. Kiev's pro-Western leaders hope Sunday's election will stabilize the former Soviet republic.
