House of Representatives votes to end bulk collection of phone records
The U.S. House of Representatives voted on Thursday to end the government's bulk collection of telephone records. The so-called "USA Freedom Act" is the first legislative effort at surveillance reform since former contractor Edward Snowden disclosed the program a year ago. Some lawmakers argue the NSA program is legal and an essential tool for the intelligence community. Others say it is a violation of Americans' right to privacy under the U.S. Constitution.
SOUNDBITE (English) REP. JIM SENSENBRENNER, WISCONSIN REPUBLICAN SAYING: "Let me be clear, I wish this bill did more. To my colleagues who will lament the changes, I agree with you. The privacy groups who are upset about lost revisions, I share your disappointment. The negotiations for this bill were intense. We have to make compromises. But this bill still does deserve support. Don't let the perfect become the enemy of the good."
SOUNDBITE (English) REP. RUSH HOLT, NEW JERSEY DEMOCRAT SAYING: "But it still falls woefully short. This legislation still allows the government to collect everything they want against Americans: to treat Americans as suspects first and citizens second."
The bill would end the government practice of gathering information on calls made by millions of Americans and storing them for at least five years. Instead, it would leave the records with telephone companies for 18 months and the NSA could file a judicial order to collect them for security investigations. The bill now moves to the U.S. Senate for consideration.

(SOUNDBITE) (Thai) ARMY CHIEF GENERAL PRAYUTH CHAN-OCHA SAYING: "To reform the social structure economically, socially and in other ways, to create equality for everybody and for every side. The peace-maintaining committee which consists of the army, navy and air force as well as the national police has to take control of power to administrate the country from 22nd of May 2014 onward."
Hundreds of soldiers surrounded the meeting at Bangkok's Army Club shortly before announcement and could be seen confiscating weapons. Earlier in the week, Chan-ocha called rival factions to a meeting --- whose goal he said was to end the protests and violence that have gripped the country. That ended with no agreement. Shortly after Thursday's coup was confirmed, the military issued a national curfew, banning people from leaving their homes between 10pm and 5am.
Extreme thunderstorms in Colorado cause flooding, hail
Colorado submerged. Torrential rain on Wednesday night is to blame for this morning's scene. A super-cell thunderstorm traveled through Denver's northeast suburbs, bringing large amounts of hail and tornado warnings.
(SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED MAN, SAYING: "Well I got an alert on my phone saying that there was a tornado warning in the area. I told my wife about the tornado warning and told her to get into the basement. I then came out, took a few pictures - made sure I had pictures of the house to make sure I could record its condition in advance. I saw what looked like rotation in the sky - a possible funnel forming, but I never saw one. And then the wind picked really bad. The hail was constant, it just went on for some time. And as you can see, it piled up quite a bit."
It brings back recent memories of a seemingly endless winter. Hail the size of ping pong balls caused problems on the roads. In the city of Aurora, rain and hail flooded lawns and streets. Thunderstorms -- packed with hail and lightning -- also moved their way across Illinois and Indiana.
