Mubarak sentenced to three years in prison

Heavy security outside a Cairo court where former Egyptian president Hosni Mubark learned his fate. SOUNDBITE: JUDGE OSAMA SHAHEEN SAYING (ARABIC): "This court is ordering that Mohamed Hosni Said Mubarak be sentenced to prison for three years." The former leader, who along with his two sons were convicted weeks earlier of stealing public funds, showed little emotion. Gamel Mubarak as well as his brother Alaa were each sentenced to four years in prison. Judge Osama Shaheen also ordered all three to pay a fine of nearly three million dollars and to repay the government roughly 17.5 million dollars. Sources say the 23 months Mubarak has spent in jail since the 2011 uprising --- will be applied against his sentence. This means he will probably spend just over a year in prison. His legal issues are far from over though, Mubarak is also accused of ordering his forces kill protesters.

Talks to end Thai crisis inconclusive

A meeting between seven different political groups in Bangkok on Wednesday ended with no agreement. The crisis talks came just a day after the Thai army declared martial law. An army spokesperson says that all participants plan to spend some time thinking about what was discussed.

The group discussed a wide array of issues --- everything from reforming the political system to how to stop the violence that has kept tourists away. So far, none of the parties say they are considering stopping protests. Since November, nearly 30 people have been killed in demonstrations. Talks are expected to begin again on Thursday.
