Battle at Donetsk airport

It started with the early morning seizure of the airport in Donetsk by pro-Russian separatists.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) DONETSK AIRPORT SPOKESMAN DMITRY KOSINOV, SAYING: "At about three o'clock in the morning armed men arrived here. There was no direct confrontation. There was no armed conflict. They demanded everyone, including the Ukrainian military, withdraw from the airport."

Kiev's response was swift and unequivocal. Warplanes were dispatched and helicopter gunships fired on the terminal sending dark columns of smoke into the sky. The choppers also sent out decoy flares as fighters shot at them from the ground. Ukraine's rapid military response was a direct message for Russia, and the first of what will likely be many challenges for newly elected leader Petro Poroshenko government.

Seoul bus station blaze

At least six people died when fire swept through this bus terminal on the outskirts of Seoul. About 40 more were injured in the blaze on Monday. The complex also has shops and a cinema. The fire started in a food court area where renovations were being carried out. Fire fighters say a welding torch could be to blame although an investigation's underway to pinpoint exactly what caused it. They said most of the victims had inhaled smoke. South Korea's evolved into one of the world's most vibrant and technically advanced democracies but critics say regulatory controls and safety standards haven't kept pace.

It's the first time in India's history that so many South Asia leaders are among the guests at the swearing-in of a new prime minister. Leaders from Afghanistan, Sri Lanka,Nepal, and Mauritius were all arriving for the ceremony on Monday. Also significant was the arrival of Pakistan's prime minister to witness the inauguration of his Indian counterpart Narendra Modi. It's another first in the rocky history of the nuclear-armed rivals who've fought three wars since independence in 1947. Security's tight around the presidential palace where the ceremony's taking place. The event is intended to be as much a show of Modi's determination to be a key player on the global stage as a celebration of his election victory. Modi's nationalist BJP and its allies swept to power in national elections this month with a mandate for major economic reform.
