Roadside bomb kills at least 13 in Afghanistan

Emergency officials in Afghanistan are responding to the latest post-election violence. A government spokesman said a roadside bomb killed at least 13 in the Kandahar province. A hospital official said they were treating three for wounds.
阿富汗發生最新的選后暴力事件，急救官員對此作出反應。政府一名發言人表示，坎大哈省一枚路邊炸彈造成至少13人死亡。醫院一名官員稱，他們正在治療3名傷者。
(SOUNDBITE) (Pashto) QAYOOM POKHLA, DIRECTOR OF MIRWAIS HOSPITAL IN KANDAHAR SAYING: "The wounded people are under treatment and the bodies are inside the morgue."

The country went to the polls on Saturday despite threats from the Taliban and increasing violence in the run-up to the election.

Alabama residents rescued from flood

Residents at this Alabama apartment building awoke to find water quickly rising outside their doors. Birmingham is being pummeled by heavy rain.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) APARTMENT RESIDENT, ANGELA KIRBY, SAYING: "When I woke up it was moving like a river, so by the time we put on our clothes and opened the door, 5 minutes it was flooded."

Neighbors quickly alerted each other to get out.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) APARTMENT RESIDENT, STEPHANIE CARMEN, SAYING: "It was a lot of banging on the door, people were coming around making sure people were getting out."

Then rescue crews arrived, telling people to evacuate or go to a higher floor. Upstairs neighbors were glad to open their doors.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) APARTMENT RESIDENT, MONIQUE HAHN, SAYING: "Everybody's been super nice offering warm clothes, these aren't even my clothes I have on her clothes, but they've just been wonderful."

Many people were pulled to safety by rafts, past rows of cars almost completely submerged in water.

Secretary of Homeland Security visits mudslide area

The search for victims of Washington state's deadly mudslide continues. Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson toured the damage Sunday.

The March 22 mudslide killed 30 people. Thirteen are still missing.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) DEPARTMENT OF HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY JEH JOHNSON SAYING: "When you meet a family member encountered with a tragedy like this, there's really nothing you can say to ease the pain, except to say that we're here to support you."
國土安全部長杰·約翰遜(Jeh Johnson)：“當你遇到遭遇這種災難的家人時，任何話語都難以緩解痛苦，除非告訴他們我們在這里支持他們。”
Johnson also encouraged residents affected by the mudslide to apply for federal aid. Not an easy decision for this Washington resident.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) WASHINGTON RESIDENT SAYING: "It's just hard at times to go to government and ask for aid, and say, okay this is what I need, when you're used to providing for yourself."

According to FEMA, 190 people have already applied.
