Clashes erupt in Egypt after mass death sentence
埃及集體死刑判決引發沖突
Students take to the streets in Alexandria Tuesday in protest after 529 members of the Muslim Brotherhood were sentenced to death Monday. The ruling signals that the crackdown on the Brotherhood is intensifying ahead of presidential elections that army chief Field Marshal Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is expected to win.

As violence erupts in other parts of Egypt, the U.S. is calling the sentences quote "unconscionable." The Brotherhood --which is believed to number about 1 million in a population of 85 million -- has been declared a terrorist group by the government.

They offered no armed resistance, but refused to surrender, after Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Moscow's right to intervene in Crimea.Kiev's leadership, bowing to the reality on the ground, announced Ukrainian forces were being pulled out to spare them and their families from further Russian threats.

U.S. mudslide death toll rises to 14, 176 reported missing

The scale of the landslide becomes evident when seen by air. This tangled waterlogged area of mud and debris is all that's left after a massive wall of earth collapsed close to the U.S. town of Oso in Washington State over the weekend. The death toll has climbed to 14. Officials say 176 people are missing, although some are expected to overlap. Search crews have worked day and night, in treacherous quick sand conditions. But officials admit they have little hope of finding more survivors. .
