Missing plane search enters fifth day
失蹤馬航飛機(jī)搜索工作進(jìn)入第五天
The mystery of what's happened to Malaysian Airlines missing plane deepens with every passing day. As the hunt entered its fifth day on Wednesday there was still no hint of where flight MH370 may have gone or why. The Boeing 777-200 vanished on Saturday with 239 passengers and crew on board representing some 14 nationalities. John Brennan, director of the CIA in the United States, says nothing can be ruled out at this stage.

At Kuala Lumpur international airport from where the missing plane took off on Saturday travellers said they were thinking of the relatives of those on board.

Vietnam said on Wednesday it was scaling back the search for the plane in its waters. Officials said they'd asked Malaysian authorities for more information about reports the aircraft had altered course after its last known contact with controllers.

Fire wrecks U.S. apartment block

There are no reports of injuries but the fire that swept through this apartment block under construction in the U.S. took a lot of fighting. The blaze burned for several hours in the Mission Bay area of San Francisco despite the efforts of about 150 fire-fighters. Officials said the blaze was more difficult to tackle because fire suppression systems had not yet been fitted inside the 360-apartment structure. The property's developers said the cause of the fire was not immediately known.

UN warns Ukraine harming Syria peace efforts

Ukraine's troubles are damaging international efforts to bring about peace in Syria. That's according to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Guterres, who says there's a chance of huge disaster if attention is diverted from the Syrian conflict.
烏克蘭危機(jī)正在危害國際社會推進(jìn)敘利亞和平進(jìn)程的努力。這是聯(lián)合國難民事務(wù)高級專員安東尼奧·古特雷斯(Antonio Guterres)的說法。他表示，如果國際社會的注意力從敘利亞沖突轉(zhuǎn)移，將有可能面臨巨大的災(zāi)難。

The crisis in Ukraine has seen tensions rise considerably between the U.S. and its allies and Russia over Moscow's seizure of the Crimea region. Guterres says he's worried the tensions between Russia and the West could worsen divides already played out at the U.N Security Council over Syria.

The Syrian conflict enters its fourth year this week with no end in sight. The U.N is warning Syrians are about to replace Afghans as the world's largest refugee population saying more than three million Syrians may have fled. A report by the charity Save the Children this week said tens of thousands are dying, not from bombs and bullets but through disease and Syria's collapsing health system.
