Snowden: NSA data collection "not consonant with our Constitution"

The man who blew the whistle on mass spying by the U.S. National Security Agency is calling on the public to protect their privacy. Speaking via video link, former NSA contractor Edward Snowden told a packed house at the South by Southwest Interactive Festival to fight against mass surveillance.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) EDWARD SNOWDEN, FORMER SECURITY CONTRACTOR, SAYING: "The NSA, the sort of global mass surveillance that's occurring in all of these countries, not just the U.S. and it's important to remember that this is a global issue, they are setting fire to the future of the internet and the people who are in this room now, you guys are all the firefighters."

Snowden revealed last year in an interview with The Guardian that the U.S. was storing telephone and internet data of millions of Americans, which prompted him to speak up.

Snowden is wanted in the U.S. to face criminal charges for his disclosures. He currently lives in Russia, where he has temporary asylum.

Standoff at San Diego FBI office ends

SWAT teams responded to a standoff at an FBI office in San Diego on Sunday. A suspect jumped a security gate around 11:30 a.m. local time and demanded to speak with a federal agent. He made his way to a parking structure and climbed the roof of a building, threatening to jump. That's when he called a local newsroom from the roof to ask for camera crews.

The stand off ended after six hours with the suspect in custody. He was later identified as 36-year-old William Durant. His motive remains unclear.

Boston trolley derails, leaving passengers with minor injuries

Aerial news footage shows the aftermath in Boston where a trolley train derailed on Monday afternoon. Boston EMS report 10 people were taken to local hospitals with mostly minor injuries. Pictures released on the transit authority's twitter feed show the trolley off the tracks, leaning against a tunnel wall, at an underground crossing. Local media say the front of the two-car trolley derailed where two tracks intersect. Emergency crews cleared the area and the cause is under investigation.
