Saxony Switzerland National Park, Germany
Despite its misleading name, this National Park sits squarely in eastern Germany. Though you could be forgiven for thinking you were amidst Alpine foothills when you glance around the rocky outcrops for which this area is famous.
Its otherworldly sandstone formations were created by the Elbe river carving up the seafloor over millions of years during the Cretaceous period, creating a fantastical “city of stone” in the process. A perfect spot for picnics is on the Bastei rocks with their sweeping views of the River Elbe and the scenic bridge that spans between the boulders.
