Vatnajökull National Park, Iceland
Five years ago Iceland embarked on a major conservation effort, uniting two of its existing national parks to create the largest national park in Western Europe. Spanning nearly 8,500 square miles (that’s just short of 13% of the country), Vatnajökull is also appropriately home to the largest glacier in the world outside the Arctics – the massive Vatnajökull glacier which measures over 3,000ft thick in some areas.
This park is characterised by the constant battle between fire and ice. Snowy white glaciers are contrasted by black volcanic beaches and piping hot streams erupt through frozen banks of ice to ensure a very dynamic and ever-changing landscape.
