Taking in five picturesque seaside villages between Levanto and La Spezia, Cinque Terre is so breathtakingly beautiful it is hard to believe it is real and not a modern-day Disneyland Italia. Expect colourful flower boxes outside windows, freshly laundered washing flapping over twisting alleyways and enough picturesque passages to fill a dozen photographic memory cards.

Perched high above the crashing waves, Monterosso, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola and Riomaggiore cling to the cliffs like pastel-hued mussels, each boasting its own unique character and charm which has remained largely intact thanks to its UNESCO World Heritage status. No cars or motorbikes are allowed in the villages, making them a pedestrian paradise best accessed by train.
