【語法用法】
allow有“給”的意思，后可以加雙賓語。
He allows his son ￥10 a week.
permit和allow兩詞的用法和意思相近。
兩者可以通用，均指“允許”，且后面都可加賓語加不定式。
Allow/Permit me to congratulate you on your success.
當不存在賓語的時候，兩詞后加動名詞。
We do not allow/permit smoking in the kitchen.
allow和permit還常用于被動語態(tài)。
Smoking is not allowed/permitted in the kitchen.
但allow可與副詞搭配使用，而permit不行。
She wouldn't allow me in.
此外，allow有“容許，并不禁止”的意思，而permit指“準許”，比allow更正式化。

【詞義辨析】
1.allow, let, permit, leave, authorize
這些動詞均含“讓、允許”之意。
allow普通用詞，側重聽任、默許或不加阻止。在正式場合可用來表客氣的請求。
let常用詞，用于各種非正式場合，語氣最弱，指允許或無力阻止某事，暗示漠不關心或聽之任之。
permit正式用詞，在多數(shù)場合可與allow換用，語義最強，指準許某人做某事，含權威或正式的意味。
leave側重不加干涉。
authorize語氣最強，指權威性的允許與認可。
2.allow, let
二者均可作“允許”解，但各有側重：
allow重在“允許”或“容許”，也可表示客氣的請求，常用于allow sb．to do sth．或allow doing sth．結構中。
He allowed me to take his dictionary.
他允許我拿走他的詞典。
Will you allow me to use your bike？
我可以用你的自行車嗎？
let作“允許”或“讓”解，主要用于口語，一般可與allow互換。作“允許”解時，常暗含“聽任”、“默許”之意；作“讓”解時，常含“祈使”或“建議”之意。注意：let之后作賓補的不定式不帶to，且不可用于被動語態(tài)，而allow則相反。

one's service常表示不同的意思。

他雇她做他的保姆。
句中his service意思為“他的被人服務”。

civil service,diplomatic service,customs service這些表達方式中，有時前面加the，有時不加，意思也有所不同；
當service解釋為“……部門的工作”時，總要有governmental service和military service，前面不帶the。
