eat 使困擾; 使不開心
A. What's eating you? You've been so quiet all morning.
A: 什么事讓你不開心呢? 你整個早上都不說話。
B: I bombed in my final exam.
B: 我的期末失敗了!
"What's eating you?"是個很常耞到的俚語。當你覺得某個人好像為某事所困擾, 以致整個人不大對勁, 就可以用這句話來問他, 到底發生什么事了。
"bomb" 是個很有意思的字, 因為可以表示“完全的失敗”, 也可以表示“作得很好”。要看當時的情形來決定。
jazz (something) up 讓(一件事物)變得有趣些
A: What do you think of this?
A: 你覺得這怎么樣?
B: It's kind of dead. Maybe you want to add more graphics to jazz it up.
B: 有點悶。也許你可以加點圖讓它變得生動有趣些。
"jazz (something) up" 是使一件原本可能有點沉悶的事變得有趣些。好比有人在一個冗長的會議里作些說些笑話之類的事, 企圖讓大家從昏迷中醒來, 就可以說"He tried to jazz the meeting up."
My hands are tied 我無能為力
A: Mr. Leroad, can I hand in my homework next time. I left it at home.
A: Leroad 先生, 我能不能下次再交作業呢? 我把功課忘在家里了。
B: All of the scores must be given to the office by Friday, so you must have your homework today. It is a school rule and there is nothing I can do. My hands are tied!.
B: 所有的分數都必須在禮拜五前交到辦公室(學校), 所以你今天一定要有你的作業。這是學校的規定, 我無能為力。
"My hands are tied." 在這里并不是真正“手被綁起來”的意思, 而是指“沒辦法”的意思。好比電話響了, 你很忙不能接, 也可以說:"Can you get it? My hand are tied." (我很忙, 你能接一下嗎?") 。
love handles 游泳圈、中廣、胖的腰圍
A: You'd better lose those love handles fast. I'm tired of having so much to hold on to.
A: 你最好快把你的肥肚子減掉。我對有這么多(肥肉)在那里讓我可以抓著覺得很煩。
B: I think I look fine, my dear.
B: 親愛的, 我覺得我看起來很好啊!
上面的對話可能是一些太太會對發福的先生所講的。
maxed out 累慘了
A: I'm working 70 hours this week. I'm totally maxed out.
A: 我這星期工作七十個小時。我真是完全累壞了。
B: 70 hours? I'd be dead if I worked this hard.
B: 七十個小時? 我要是工作這么多, 我一定會死了
"max" 是“極限”的意思。用"maxed out" 來表示一個人累慘了應該是貼切的!
If You Snooze, You Lose! 如果你不注意, 就錯過良機了。
A: Hey! Where did all the cake go? I haven't got any of it.
A: 嘿! 蛋糕都到那里去了? 我一點都沒吃過。
B: There's no cake left. Your brother ate the last piece. If you snooze, you lose!
B: (蛋糕)都沒了。你弟弟(或哥哥)吃了最后一塊。你沒快點行動, 機會(此指蛋糕)就沒了啊!
有些鬧鐘上面有一個讓你可以在鬧鐘響后, 再小睡一下的按鍵。這個按鍵就叫"snooze"。所以"If you snooze, you lose." 就變成 “如果你貪睡(不注意)的話, 你就不會贏了?！钡囊馑?。 \
jerk one's chain 煩(某)人
A: Hey! Can I ask you another question?
A: 我可不可以再問你一個問題呢?!
B: Stop jerking my chain. I'm trying to study here.
B: 不要再煩我了! 我要讀書!
"jerk one's chain" 是一個幾有趣的俚語。假設你脖子上有條鏈子, 有個人每二分鐘就來像拉狗煉般扯一下, 你是不是覺得很煩呢? "Stop jerking my chain." 就是"Leave me alone." 不要吵我的意思。
have a cow (俚語)非常生氣
A: When I told my mom I would be home around 2 am, she had a cow!
A: 我跟我媽說我會到半夜二點才回家, 她氣死了。
B: Duh!
B: 廢話!(怎么會不生氣?)
不知道為什么會用"have a cow" 來表示“很生氣”。實際上, "have kittens" 也是同樣的意思!
"Duh!" 是加國人用來表示“這不是廢話嗎?”、“這還用說嗎?”等所發出來的一種語音。說的時候要有一種attitude, 有點像說中文的“廢話!”那樣的語氣。
