Spain welcomes new king
Spain's new king appears before the nation for the first time Prince Felipe officially became King Felipe VI of Spain at midnight on Wednesday. He takes over after the suprise abdication of King Juan Carlos. With his family looking on, the former king hands the royal sash to his son in a ceremony at the Zarzuela Palace. Spain's new head of state will face a barrage of challenges. The country is struggling with high unemployment and a surging independence movement in wealthy Catalonia. He will also have to rebuild the monarchy's reputation after a wave of scandals. For now these issues can wait. Today is about pomp and ceremony. Most of these Spaniards lining the street appeared to wish their new king well.

Obama sends military advisors to Iraq
There will be boots on the ground. Sort of. Nearly 300 U.S. military personnel are headed to Iraq and will act as advisors to the country's security forces, which are struggling to beat back an insurgency by Sunni militants. The President, in a briefing at the White House, did make a distinction.
SOUNDBITE: U.S. President Barack Obama saying: "American forces will not be returning to combat in Iraq, but we will help Iraqis as they take the fight to terrorists who threaten the Iraqi people, the region."
The President, who was responsible for the drawdown of U.S. forces in the country, said advisors will be stationed at key military outposts throughout the country. Many expect the "eyes on" forces will supplement the U.S.' intelligence picture of ISIL --- short for the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant. Obama made no specific comments about Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's Shi'ite government, but did stress the need for diplomacy.
許多人預測這些“眼線”將補充美國關于ISIL(伊拉克和黎凡特伊斯蘭國)的情報 。
SOUNDBITE: U.S. PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA SAYING: "It is clear that only leaders that can govern with an inclusive agenda that can are going to truly be able to bring the Iraqi and get them through this crisis. The United States will not support military options that support one sect inside Iraq at the expense of another."
Maliki's government has struggled to gain the trust of Kurds and Sunnis and a late night meeting earlier in the week between factions ended with little progress.
Storms uproot massive trees
Residents in the Washington, DC area woke up to the aftermath of powerful storms Wednesday night. Straight line winds -- at about 60 to 80 miles-per-hour -- uprooted massive trees and knocked down power lines in Virginia. They fell onto homes and cars -- and blocked traffic. Authorities said the storms left thousands of homes without power. Crews in Maryland got to work on Thursday to clean up the mess. So far, no injuries have been reported.
