Blast in Kabul kills at least 3 foreign soldiers

Forces in Afghanistan are on high alert after officials say a suspected suicide bomber attacks a military convoy outside Kabul. Officials say the attack killed at least three foreign soldiers. It's unknown how many were injured.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack which comes as President Hamid Karzai deliberates over an agreement allowing U.S. forces to stay in the country beyond 2014. Many Afghans, including a number of tribal leaders, have urged Karzai to sign the U.S. pact quickly. Some are concerned about security in the country after 2014 when most foreign forces are leaving.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) PROFESSOR OF CLIMATE CHANGE, UNIVERSITY OF NEW SOUTH WALES, CHRIS TURNEY, SAYING: "I'm not sure if you can see but just over my right shoulder is the Chinese icebreaker Snow Dragon. It turned up about an hour ago and it's making steady progress at around two knots. It should be alongside us, if all things go well in the next two to three hours. There's a lot of relief amongst the team and there's a lot of happy faces."

Supporters of ousted President Mohamed Mursi take to the streets in Cairo Friday -- chanting that the Muslim Brotherhood is no terrorist group. And then came the clashes. Anger and uproar spills into the streets days after the government declared that the Brotherhood was a terrorist organization. At least two people were killed in clashes. Student protests continued at several universities in Cairo and around the country. This comes despite the arrest of dozens of Muslim Brotherhood supporters before Friday prayers, with the government anticipating further protests despite having clamped down on dissent. Officials issued a new round of warnings that anyone taking part in protests to support the Islamist movement will be punished under terrorism laws. Some analysts warn the escalating crackdown on the Brotherhood risks triggering more violence in a country already facing the worst internal strife in its modern history.
