North Korean leader visits frontline

The North Korean leader begins a troop inspection amid rising tension on the peninsular. State television showed Kim Jong-un on Thursday (March 7) visiting two military units near its sea border with the South. The state news agency said he urged the soldiers to respond to any attack. The footage was released as the United Nations approved new sanctions targeting the North nuclear and missile programmes. South Korea's defence ministry welcomed the move, and said they are ready to act if provoked.

SOUTH KOREAN DEFENCE MINISTRY SPOKESMAN KIM MIN-SEOK SAYING: "If North Korea attacks South Korea with nuclear power, the Kim Jong-un regime will be extinct from the Earth by the will of mankind as well as by South Korea. Tension has risen in recent days as North Korea threatened the U.S. with a pre-emptive nuclear strike. Experts believe it's a largely empty warning as Pyongyang has no capability to hit the U.S. Mainland.

Suspect in fatal NYC hit-and-run crash arrested

A New York City man with a lengthy criminal record surrendered to police on Wednesday, ending a manhunt for the driver who fled the scene of a deadly hit-and-run crash. The 44-year-old Brooklyn man earlier killed a young couple; their unborn child was later delivered by C-section, but then also died.

The victims were both 21-year-old from a close-knit Orthodox Jewish community in Williamsburg. They were on their way to the hospital when their taxi was hit broadside by a grey BMW sedan just after midnight on Sunday. The New York Daily News reported that the suspect said he fled the scene of the accident because he was afraid of being shot.

A mother fights to educate her daughters

In a small Pakistani village, 44 year old Nabeela Bano walks home with her buffalo. The money she earns selling it's milk helps put her four daughters through school. Eight years ago she was widowed, and has fought everyday since to provide the kind of life for her family she never had. Strong taboos still exist in Pakistan against women.

In the capital Islamabad, female members of parliament praise the progress of women's rights saying a substantial amount of funding has been allocated for girls' schools. But in Bano's village, those schools remain to be seen. Her daughters walk to another village everyday to attend class as there are no schools for girls here. Bano's decision to continue her daughters education has drawn criticism from villagers, but praise and respect from her daughters.

But my mother said, 'I could not study myself, and if I stop my daughters from getting educated, it will be too bad. Look at my plight. If I was educated, I would have been able to do something better today. My daughters are going to study.' My mother stands up like a rock in front of everyone (who does not want us to go to school)."

International Women's Day, March 8th, is held every year to help nations worldwide promote and protect women's rights. And to honour women like Bano who fights daily to improve the life of her daughters. I am doing all this only for my children, she said. If I do not, who will? There is no one else.
