【語法用法】
語法
determine后常加不定式，有時加on，upon和動名詞。
He has determined to propose a new method.
他決定要提議個新方法。
determined是過去時，表示“當時決定”，had determined表示“那時已經決定”，was determined表示“有決心的”。要注意前面兩個都表示的是“一時的”，不可以與for a long time等表示時間段的詞連用；
determine后可接that從句中，注意使用虛擬語氣。
He has determined that his son shall have a good education.
他決定要給兒子一個好的教育。
【錯句舉例與錯句分析】
錯句: They now have the evidence that will determine the cause.
訂正: They now have the evidence that will reveal the cause.
翻譯: 他們現已有了夠揭示原因的證據。
分析: evidence表示有原因，但并不能決定一件事，用reveal更合適。
【詞義辨析】
decide, determine, resolve, settle
這些動詞都含“決定”之意。
decide側重指經過思考、比較、討論或詢問之后做出的決定。
determine指經過深思熟慮，決心去做某事并堅持施行。
resolve語氣較強，強調以堅定不移的信念去做或不做某事，暗含有遠大抱負和堅強決心。
settle指排除猶豫、懷疑和爭論之后作出明確的最終結論。
【例句用法】
1.The exam results could determine your career.
考試成績可能會決定你的前途。
2.That determined her against leaving home.
那件事使她決定不離開家了。
3.The court determined that the man was guilty of assault.

二.protect：v.保護, 投保
【語法用法】
語法
表示“保護……不使受到……的損害或侵犯”時常用結構protect...against/from...來表示，但較大的事件如天災多用against，小事件如冷氣則用from。
Some insurance policies do not protect the insured against acts of God.
I was wearing a fur coat to protect myself from the cold.
【詞義辨析】
defend, protect, safeguard, guard, shield, shelter, harbour
這些動詞均有“保護、保衛”之意。
defend普通用詞，指用武力或其它措施使人或物不受損害，消除危險。用作比喻時，指堅持某種行動、決定或意見。
protect普通用詞，指用某種手段作為防御工具以防危險或傷害。
safeguard語氣強，指采取積極措施預防可能發生的一切攻擊或危險。
guard普通用詞，指保持警惕以防可能的攻擊或傷害。
shield語氣比protect強，但側重防止迫在眉睫的攻擊或傷害。
shelter通常指尋找安全地方躲避風雨或使人免遭危害。
harbour貶義詞，指隱匿或非法保護、窩藏。
