【詞義辨析】
besides，but，except，except for
besides: 著重于指另外還有。
but: 側重指不包括在內。
except: 側重于排除在外，從整體里減去?？膳cbut換用，但語氣較強。
except for: 多用于在說明基本情況或對主要部分加以肯定，還引出相反的原因或細節，從而部分地修正前面的主要意思，含惋惜意味。
【例句用法】
1.They all went to sleep except me.
除我之外，他們都去睡覺了。
2.I excepted James from my invitation.
我沒有邀請詹姆斯。
二.mean：v. 意思是，打算，導致，意味 adj. 低劣的，刻薄的，卑鄙的，出色的，吝嗇的，平均的，中等的 n. 平均值，平均數，中間，中庸
【詞語用法】
1.mean指“意欲”時，可接不定式，但不接動名詞。
I mean to make his acquaintance.
我想和他熟悉了解下。
2.mean前可與介詞by搭配。
By that word is meant something different.
3.mean表示“（某詞或某語）作什么解釋”，用“What does ... mean?”。
What does 'fruit' mean?
4.mean后可接雙賓語。
They mean us no harm.
他們不想傷害我們。
5.What do you mean?使用比How do you mean?普遍，有時還可表示生氣或抗議。
What do you mean, I can't sing？
你什么意思？我不能唱歌？
6.in the mean time同in the meantime都指“在此期間”，也同副詞形式的meantime，meanwhile同義，表示相同意思的還有in the mean while以及in the meanwhile。現使用比較普遍的有in the meantime和 meanwhile；
7.no mean指“相當的，很好的”，用時句中可不加不定冠詞。
He is no mean cricketer.
他是個很好的板球運動員。
8.“I mean..."作句子開頭時，通常是要開始做一個附加資料的介紹或是解釋，屬非正式格式。
【錯句舉例與錯句分析】
錯句：He determined to get there before dawn,even if it means to walk all night.
糾正：He determined to get there before dawn,even if it means walking all night.
翻譯：他決定天亮前到那，即使要走上一整晚。
分析：mean在這的主語不是人，不指“意欲”，后不加不定式，應加動名詞。
【例句用法】
1.I wasn't serious. I meant it as a joke.
我并非有意。我是想開個玩笑而已。
2.He means business: he really will shoot us if we try to escape.
他不是說著玩的; 我們要是逃，他真會開槍。
3.Do you mean Miss Anne Smith or Miss Mary Smith?
你指的是安·史密斯小姐還是瑪麗·史密斯小姐？
4.I'm sorry I hurt you: I didn't mean to.
對不起，我弄傷了你; 我不是故意的。
5.He's hopelessly inefficient, but I suppose he means well.
他低能得無以復加，然而卻是出于好心。
