如若不信，或者模糊，老鞋搬來救援部隊：suspend。

　　先看好了：-pend-，親兄弟，童叟無欺哈！

　　When you violate the rules in some specific manner, the traffic police may suspend your driver's license.

　　當你以某種特定的方式（manner）違規的時候，交通警察叔叔可能____你的駕照（driver's license)。

　　吊銷！

　　為什么漢語與英語都用一個“吊”（pend)來表示這個意思——老鞋從未想明白。管它了！

　　再看它的名詞suspense:

　　The stories of Jin Yong are full of suspenses, focusing our attentin on it all the time.

　　說的是：金庸大俠的小說充滿了____，使我們時時沉浸其中。

　　沒看出來的話，揭曉：“懸疑”的“懸”，就是“吊”——沒聽說過“懸掛”嗎？

　　題外話：兩個不重要的詞，忍不住拿來助陣。pendulum(物理學中傳說的鐘擺)；pendent(首飾，當然更指身體各個部位吊著的金屬非金屬）。

　　depend upon之表示“依賴/取決于”，不只是depend之功。軍功章里，至少也有on/upon的一半。因為on就有“依靠”之意。不信請看：

　　Don't rely on others; you are to live on your own.

　　不要靠別人；要靠自己（也叫“自力更生”）。

　　The strength of a country does not rest upon economic development alone; it rests upon education, at least to the same extent.

　　一個國家的實力不只是取決于經濟發展；它至少在相同的程度上有賴于其教育水平。

　　上面“不要靠別人；要靠自己”的勵志話語，也可換成下面的方式。

　　Don't be dependent on others; be independent!

　　兩個形容詞，因的出現而意思相反：一個“依賴于……的”，一個“不依賴于……的”或“獨立的”。

　　-ent/ance，往往是形容詞的尾巴；有時是名詞尾巴，似-er（如persistent, important, reluctant皆形容詞；assistant為“助手”即出手幫助的人，上面提過的pendent是吊著的東西)。
說到獨立，而且是英語，不免想提及（refer to)今天依然有著不俗名氣（enjoy remarkable reputation)的一個文件(document)：Declaration of Independence。

　　-ence/ance, 基本上是名詞的尾巴（如persistence, importance, reluctance, assistance等)。
