Before Ting Fang or the other children had time to ask her what she meant,

the little girl had rushed off down the Big Horse Road.
小女孩就朝著著大馬道飛奔而去。
The children sat down, wondering how poor Ting Fang could ever get his sandals back.
孩子們坐下來，想想怎么幫助可憐的方廷把草鞋給找回來。
In a few moments they saw the little girl coming back, and with her was a tall young man.
過了一會兒，他們看見小女孩回來了，帶回一位高大的年輕人。
"Who is he? What is he going to do?"
“他是誰？他要干什么?”
the children whispered; but the little girl only laughed happily, and the young man said, "Wait and see."
孩子們低聲說；但是小女孩只是開心地笑了笑，年輕人說：“等著瞧吧。”
Then Ting Fang led the way to the Road Between Ponds. When they came to the narrow street,

the tall young man told the children to wait

while he and Ting Fang crept carefully along the narrow strip of land between the ponds.

"Now show me where the rope slid in," the children heard the young man say to Ting Fang.
“告訴我繩子滑到哪里去了。”孩子們聽見年輕人對方廷說道。
Ting Fang pointed to the spot.
方廷指了指。
There was still the mark of the rope on the muddy road like the mark of a water snake.
泥濘的小路上仍然有繩子的痕跡，就像一條水蛇。
And then before the children could guess what was happening, the young man had dived into the pond.
孩子們還沒來得及猜到發生什么，年輕人就跳進了池塘。
In a moment he was up again, tossing his hair from his eyes and smiling at the little girl,
