Ting Fang did not know what to do.

Ting Fang tried not to cry as he walked along to Big Horse Road again.
方廷再次沿著大馬路踽踽獨(dú)行,努力抑制住自己的眼淚。
The children ran to meet him with their long ropes of sandals dragging behind them.
孩子們拖著長(zhǎng)長(zhǎng)的草鞋跑過(guò)去迎接方廷。
"How many did you get, Ting Fang?" they cried,
方廷,你撿了多少?”孩子們問(wèn)到。
and then stopped in surprise when they saw that he had no rope in his hand.
當(dāng)他們看到方廷手里沒(méi)有繩子時(shí),他們驚訝地停下腳步。
"Where are your sandals?" one asked.
“你的草鞋呢?”一個(gè)孩子問(wèn)道
"I have lost them," said Ting Fang, struggling hard to keep back his tears.
“我給弄丟了。”方廷一邊說(shuō)一邊拼命忍住眼淚。
"Oh, Ting Fang," said the little girl whom he had helped out of the ditch earlier that morning,
“哦,方廷,”那天早晨他從溝里救的那個(gè)小女孩說(shuō)道,
"where did you lose them?"

"The rope slipped off the Road Between Ponds,
“繩子從兩池塘間的那條道上滑了下去,
and all my sandals are down at the bottom of the pond.
所有的草鞋都沉入水底。
Mother will have no fire tonight.
媽媽今晚沒(méi)有火。
You won after all," Ting Fang ended,
終究是你贏了,”方廷說(shuō),
trying to smile at the little girl who had been second in the race.
他努力對(duì)那個(gè)比賽排名第二的小女孩露出微笑。
"But you helped me," she cried.
“但是你幫助了我,”她說(shuō)道。
"Wait here a moment—perhaps I can help you now."
