China seems far, far away, and its people seem very strange to us;
中國似乎是個遙遠的地方,中國人民對我們來說很陌生;
but Chinese boys and girls are very much like the boys and girls you know.
They love their homes and parents, have their lessons to learn, and like to playgames.
This story tells about a game which may seem queer to you,
but the Chinese boys and girls who played it thought it was great fun.
THE BIG RAIN
大雨
"Oh, little Ting Fang, it’s cold today!" said a Chinese mother as she stood in the door of her poor little house and shivered.
Her son, Ting Fang, stood beside her and looked out into the narrow path between his house and the other houses in Ricksha Man Alley.
"It has rained for two whole days," he said, "and such terrible rain it is!
Just like long silver needles to prick us." Ting Fang shivered, too, and tucked his hands up in his sleeves to keep them warm.
