THE DONKEY RACE
驢賽
There were ten donkeys entered for the race; some of them looked very spick and span,
參加比賽的有十頭驢；有些看起來干凈整潔，
with beautiful saddles and stirrups and reins.
戴著漂亮的馬鞍、馬鐙和韁繩。
The ten donkeys were arranged in a row across the road.
十頭驢排成一排，排在馬路對面。
At a signal, they all started running as hard as they could; that is, all but Tintourlet.
一聽到信號，這些驢就開始拼命地跑，除了丁圖萊特。
He looked about him, and when Tonino clicked his tongue and cried out, "Run, Tintourlet, run!"
丁圖萊特環顧四周，托尼諾叫道：“快跑，丁圖萊特，快跑！”
he began to walk slowly along the road.
丁圖萊特開始沿著這條路慢慢地走起來。
Everybody shouted with laughter.
每個人都喊道，歡聲笑語一片。
I don't know what would have happened if a man had not blown a loud blast on his horn to cheer the race on.
如果人們沒有吹大喇叭為比賽加油的話，我不知道會發生什么。
It acted like magic on Tintourlet.
丁圖萊特就像被施了魔法一樣。
He put his ears back and dashed forward without even waiting to bray.

So fast did he gallop that he hardly seemed to touch the road with his hoofs.

In no time he had passed the first donkey and the second one too.

There were still seven donkeys ahead of him, but Tintourlet put on more speed,

and soon there were only two in front, and the crowd was cheering!
很快前面就只剩下兩頭驢了，人群歡呼起來！
Still Tintourlet ran faster and faster,
丁圖萊特跑得越來越快，
and passed the leading donkey just a few yards before he shot under the flag that marked the end of the race.
裁判在終點射擊前，他領先幾碼遠。
Tonino couldn't stop him, though he tugged at the bridle with all his might.
盡管托尼諾用盡力氣拉著韁繩，仍無法阻止丁圖萊特，
They had gone nearly half a mile beyond the flag before the donkey would slow up and allow Tonino to turn and walk him back.
在超過旗子近半英里外，丁圖萊特才放慢速度，托尼諾這才得以轉身走著帶他回去。
The people were still cheering. They said it was the most wonderful donkey race they had ever seen,
人們仍在歡呼，聲稱這是他們見過最精彩的驢賽，
and that Tintourlet was a racing donkey if ever there was one.
而且丁圖萊特是頭賽驢，如果有的話。
Tintourlet had won the race at the Big Fair of Vence!
丁圖萊特在旺斯大集市上贏得了比賽！
The prizes were all to be given that very night at ten o'clock on the Grand Place.
