TONINO TAKES HIS POTTERY TO THE FAIR

Tonino and his sister, Nanou, lived in the little old town of Nouvilo in southeastern France.

Many children in Nouvilo decorated pottery for the potter in the next village,

but Tonino learned to make, in his own home, cunning little bowls and cups with figures of his pet animals for handles.

Nanou painted them in gay colors. Then Mameto, his grandmother,

ARRIVING IN VENCE

Vence is a very old city in France.

It has towers and city gates and narrow streets just like Nouvilo.

Long before Tonino arrived at the outside wall,

he could see the cathedral tower sticking up in the middle of the city.

All around the old city were rows and rows of houses, white or pink or pale yellow, and with bright red roofs.

There was a broad avenue shaded by big trees and with many big hotels.

When they turned into the main street, Tonino was surprised at the shops he saw:

a grocery shop with big glass windows, shops with pretty dresses in the windows,

There was even a shop where they sold automobiles.

Tonino had never imagined anything like it in his life,
