The little boy was so busy that he did not have time to be lonesome,
and he quite forgot how sad he had been because he could not go to the city.
What fun it was to see a rabbit or a bear or a goat come out of the wood!
By spring Franz had made many kinds of animals.
When his mother and John came home, they found that the little boy had been busy and happy all winter.
"Have the animals all been made with the luck knife?" asked John.
"Yes," Franz answered. "It's a splendid knife, but I don't see yet where the luck comes in."
Again the boy's grandfather smiled as if he knew a secret.
In a few days Franz's mother got a letter from a friend in the city, saying that she and her little boy were coming to the mountains for the summer.
A week later they arrived at Franz's home.
Almost as soon as the boy came into the house, he saw the wooden animals that Franz had made.
"Oh, oh!" he cried, "dogs, cats, sheep, and goats, and all made of wood! I want them."
"He means that he wants to buy them," said his mother. "Will you sell them, Franz?"
