To pass the time away, Franz helped his grandfather part of the day and then whittled just for fun.
How The Gift Brought Luck To Franz
One day as the boy was whittling, his grandfather said, "Why don't you make an animal, Franz?"
The lad looked up in surprise. "I don't believe I can," he answered.
"You can't if you don't try," said the old man. "But if you really try, you may surprise yourself."
Franz thought for a little while; then he said, "I wonder if I could make a sheep."
The boy took his new knife and went to work.
At first he didn't make anything that looked much like a sheep, but he kept on working.
Then, with a little help from his grandfather, Franz began to see a sheep coming out of the piece of wood. How proud he was!
"It wasn't hard, was it?" asked his grandfather.
"No," said the boy. "It wasn't very hard."
Every day after that Franz worked eagerly.
Animal after animal was whittled with the knife.
