Fat chance 不可能，沒門兒 是一種諷刺(sarcastically)的說法
A: Are you going to buy me a new coat for Christmas?你會給我買件新外套當做圣誕節禮物嗎?
B：Fat chance!沒門兒!

“fat chance”表示有機會還是沒機會？首先，應該明確回答：沒機會。這個習慣用語比較特別，從字面上看，“fat”是大的意思，所以“fat chance”應該是有大的機會；但實際上它的意思正好相反。這里我們應該聯系另一個習慣用語“slim chance”一起來學習。“slim”是瘦小的意思，所以“slim chance”自然表示機會小。也就是說，“slim chance”和“fat chance”表達的是基本相同的意思。那么它們的區別在哪里呢？這里，“slim chance”是直接表達，是平鋪直敘；而“fat chance”是間接表達，有諷刺的意味。“slim chance”告訴你機會不多，但可能有一點，“可能性不大”；“fat chance”告訴你沒有機會，零機會，“可能性為零”。

“fat chance”的出處似乎不可考。我在網上沒有找到，問同事也沒有得到一個滿意的答復。我想，既然“fat”具有貶義，“fat chance”也自然應該是貶義的了。中文里類似的現象也是有的。比如人們說“偉光正”，直接理解是“偉大光榮正確”，但誰都知道那是貶義的。這樣的習慣用語很多，只能一個一個地記憶了。
