What if…?的三種用法

1. 表示假設(shè)

what if 用于提出假設(shè)時(shí)，意思是“假若……”“假若……怎么辦”“要是……將會怎么樣”，其后句子可用陳述語氣（用一般現(xiàn)在時(shí)），也可用虛擬語氣（用一般過去時(shí)或should+動詞原形）。如：
What if she finds out that you’ve lost her book? 如果她發(fā)現(xiàn)你把她的書丟了怎么辦?
But what if somebody decides to break the rules? 但是如果有人決定打破這些規(guī)則呢？
What if it rains when we can’t get under shelter? 假若下起雨來，我們又沒處避雨可怎么辦?

從句用虛擬語氣時(shí)，若是針對過去情況，從句則用過去完成時(shí)。如：
What if no one had been there? 假如沒有人去過那里的話，會怎么樣?

2. 表示邀請或建議

What if…表示邀請或建議時(shí)，意思是“如果……怎么樣？”“如果……如何？”。如：
What if you join us for lunch? 同我們一起吃午飯?jiān)趺礃樱?br /> What if we moved the sofa over here? Would that look better? 要是我們把沙發(fā)挪到這邊來會怎么樣？看上去會不會好一些？

3. 表示不重要

此時(shí)通常常與so連用，意為“就算……那又怎樣？”如：
So what if we're a little late? 就算我們遲到一會兒那又怎樣？
So what if the colours clashed? 就算顏色不協(xié)調(diào)那又怎樣？

注：若句意清楚，so what if…有時(shí)可省略成so what? 如：
A：I'm afraid it's too expensive. 恐怕太貴了。
B：So what? We've plenty of money. 那有什么關(guān)系? 我們有的是錢。

He held up his hand in amazement.

Nothing can hold up our progress.
什么也不能阻擋我們?nèi)〉眠M(jìn)步。
The application has been held up by red tape.
申請被官僚的繁文縟節(jié)所耽擱。
This nail will not hold such a heavy mirror.
這個(gè)釘子支撐不住這樣重的鏡子。

sabotage：陰謀破壞
They tried to sabotage my birthday party.
他們企圖破壞我的生日晚會。
The rebels had tried to sabotage the oil pipeline.
反叛者試圖破壞輸油管道。
