電影中的Keating老師熱愛(ài)人生、崇尚自由、充滿激情,他希望并鼓勵(lì)重壓之下的孩子們能夠張揚(yáng)個(gè)性,體會(huì)生命存在的浪漫與美好。他告訴孩子們不要墨守陳規(guī),一味服從。如果站在講臺(tái)上可以使我們換一種視角看世界,那就站上去。下面我們將要聽(tīng)到的就是Keating老師鼓勵(lì)孩子們站上講臺(tái)的片段。

Mr Keating: Why do I stand up here? Anybody?

Mr Keating: No! Thank you for playing.
I stand upon my desk to remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way.
See, the world looks very different from up here.

Just when you think you know something, you have to look at it in another way. Even though it may seem silly or wrong, you must try.
Now when you read, don't just consider what the author thinks. Consider what you think.

站上講臺(tái)只是一個(gè)形式,它不可能真的改變一個(gè)人既有的理解世界的方式。但這個(gè)做法的目的卻在于remind myself that we must constantly look at things in a different way. Remind 提醒。Constantly經(jīng)常地;不斷地。我們必須時(shí)常提醒自己用不同的角度看待事物。
Keating老師的做法也是為了告訴學(xué)生們,閱讀的時(shí)候不能just consider what the author thinks,僅僅考慮作者的觀點(diǎn)是什么,而是要Consider what you think. 而是要考慮你自己的觀點(diǎn)是什么。
他讓學(xué)生們 must strive to find your own voice. Strive to do something 努力、力求做某事。Voice除了做“嗓音”講,還有“(表達(dá)的)觀點(diǎn)”之意。也就是要能夠獨(dú)立思考。這樣做的原因就是,the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all. 句子意思是,你越晚開(kāi)始獨(dú)立思考,找到自己的想法,就越不可能找到它們。這里用到了比較級(jí)的一個(gè)特殊句型,the + 比較級(jí), the + 比較級(jí),翻譯為“越……;就越……”。來(lái)看一個(gè)例子:
--- How much water do you need? 你需要多少水?---- The much, the better. 越多越好。
Keating老師引用了梭羅的一句詩(shī):"Most men lead lives of quiet desperation." Lead…life表示“過(guò)……的生活”,大部分人過(guò)著什么樣的生活呢?quiet desperation. 看過(guò)《絕望的主婦》desperate housewives的網(wǎng)友們對(duì)desperation的意思一定不陌生了,它的意思是“絕望”。
詩(shī)句可以翻譯為“大部分人在平靜的絕望中過(guò)活”。之所以這樣,是因?yàn)榉穸俗约嚎梢宰鲂└淖儯耆玝e resigned to that。Resign to“順從”。比如:I am resigned to my fate. 我聽(tīng)從命運(yùn)的安排。
也許對(duì)于年過(guò)半百的人說(shuō)這些,意義不大,但對(duì)于一群風(fēng)華正茂的高中生來(lái)說(shuō),尋找珍貴的激情和夢(mèng)想?yún)s是必須的。因此Keating老師告訴孩子們Don't just walk off the edge like lemmings. 不能像瘋狂地小旅鼠那樣,什么都不看,就一門心思往前走,直到walk off the edge,掉下懸崖。
最后,Keating老師給大家留的作業(yè)是,寫一首詩(shī)。不限定主題,不限定字?jǐn)?shù)。聽(tīng)起來(lái)很簡(jiǎn)單的任務(wù),對(duì)于習(xí)慣了從書本里找答案,按老師規(guī)定的方式完成作業(yè)的學(xué)生來(lái)說(shuō),還真不是意見(jiàn)容易事兒。所以,Keating老師用法語(yǔ)Bon chance,戲謔地表達(dá)了“祝好運(yùn)氣”。
