Hi, 可可網友們大家好。今天我們繼續好萊塢災難片。以現實世界為起點的美國末世災難片常有表現國際政治的內容。災難是全球性的，那么就涉及到了誰來拯救，誰來引領的問題。這部《獨立日》可以說是美國主旋律色彩最為濃厚的一部電影，也是諸多美國價值觀的大包裝，例如個人英雄主義。但不管怎樣，電影中由比爾普爾曼扮演的總統在登上戰斗機前得演講卻相當令人印象深刻。無論是語速，語調還是感情的控制都恰到好處，非常值得我們學習和模仿。一起來聽。

再過不到半個小時，這些飛行員就要和全世界各國的飛行員一起展開一場被稱為人類歷史上最大的一次空戰。這樣的時刻，We can't be consumed by our petty differences any more. Consume，消費，消耗。Be consumed by因為某事消耗。這里，消耗人類力量的原因被歸結為petty differences。Petty，瑣碎的，心胸狹窄的。比如，Don't bother me with such petty things.
不要用這種小事情煩我。
這句話中用到了any more這一短語。它與后面the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday中的no longer都表示“不再”。比如：The deadline is drawing near; we can't delay any more. 限期快到了，不能再拖延。再比如：We are a people no longer subject to foreign rule. 我們是一個不再受外國統治的民族。
危機之時，common interest將會讓人類團結起來。Common interest，共同利益。比如：The two parties were linked together by common interest. 兩個黨派被共同的利益聯系在一起。
電影中，決戰之日碰巧是美國的國慶七月四日，所以這位總統大人說perhaps it's fate that today is the 4th of July. It's fate that... 什么什么是命中注定的。再來看一個例子。Maybe it's fate that we meet each oher. 可能是上帝的安排讓我們遇見。
And should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday. 大家都知道，這是戰前的演講，結果還未知，所以，本句屬于假設，虛擬。英語中，當虛擬條件句的謂語動詞含有were, should, had時，if可以省略，這時條件從句一般用倒裝語序，也就是把were, should, had等詞放在句首，但這種情況多用于比較正式的場合。再比如：Should he agree to go there, we would send him there. 要是他答應去的話，我們就派他去。Were she here, she would agree with us. 如果她在這兒的話，她會同意我們的。 這兩句話都屬于這種情況。
