After getting off to a quite interesting start... here at Harvard...

Ladies and gentlemen, Elle Woods.

On our very first day at Harvard... a very wise professor quoted Aristotle.
''The law is reason free from passion.''
Well, no offense to Aristotle...
but in my three years at Harvard... l have come to find that passion is a key ingredient...
to the study and practice of law and of life.
lt is with passion, courage of conviction... and strong sense of self...
that we take our next steps into the world...
remembering that first impressions... are not always correct...
you must always have faith in people...
and most importantly...
you must always have faith in yourself.
Congratulations, Class of 2004.

Elle敬重的Strong Well教授為他們主持了畢業典禮，在介紹Elle的時候，教授說到 “I am personally very honored to introduce this year's class-elected speaker.”，這里be honored to是主持會議，演出等集會時，介紹嘉賓最常用的表達法。中文翻譯為“非常榮幸得……”，后面可以接introduce, present等動詞。 類似的表達法還有很多，比如：Allow me to introduce…允許我介紹一下……。

Elle的開場白引用了亞里士多德的一句話 ''The law is reason free from passion.'' 這里要注意的是，reason已經不是我們常說的那個“原因”了，而是“理智, 理性”。比如：Once your brain cools down , your powers of reason return . 一旦你的頭腦冷靜下來，理智的力量就會回復。 另外，我們常常說的形容詞“通情達理的，有理智的，講道理的”就是用以reason為詞根的reasonable來表達的。下次，如果有人胡鬧，不講理，你可以對他說， “Be reasonable,please” 擺脫，講點道理好不好。

這一句中的free也不是“自由的”或者 “免費的”意思了。Be free from 是一個固定搭配，表示“不受……影響的；沒有……的”。比如：A judge must be free from prejudice.

法官必須不抱成見。She had the good fortune to be free from illness. 她運氣好，沒有得病。

經歷了自我否定后重新找回自信的Elle認為，passion是自己生活學習中的key ingredient。Key作“鑰匙”“答案”講的用法大家都很熟悉了。但在本段對話中，key意思是“重要的,基本的,關鍵的”，是一個形容詞。比如，在下面這個例子中：Self-confidence is the key factor in any successful career. 自信是任何成功之道的關鍵因素。 恩，這個句子中的factor“因素，要素”，就相當于電影中的，ingredient。 Ingredient除了做“因素”“成分”講外，還可以指“（烹調的)原料”， 比如： What are the ingredients of the cake? 蛋糕用哪些原料做的？

除了passion, courage of conviction. and strong sense of self激情，敢于堅持的勇氣以及對自我的認可之外，Elle格外強調了一點，We must always have faith in ourselves. have faith in“對……有信念，信任，相信”。比如：One must have faith in the future . 一個人一定要對未來有信念。We all have faith in the people we encounter during our early youth . 我們所有人對于在自己早期青年時期遇見的人抱有信念。

發言的最后，Elle恢復自己陽光可愛的一面，用We did it結束了自己的發言。We did it.是英美人非常喜歡用的一句口語表達法。意思為“我們做到了，我們成功了！”再比如：It was a game to win, we did it. 這是我們應該贏得的比賽，我們做到了。Our designs were approved . Production is gearing up. We did it. 我們的設計被批準了正要投入生產，我們成功了！
