看電影，學英語，品人生，歡迎可可網友們做客“影音時尚口語”。上一期里，被Nigel教化了一番的Andy重整旗鼓，決定用實力證明自己的能力。但忙碌的幾乎沒有私人時間的工作也使她的感情生活出現了危機。巴黎時裝展上，Andy的努力得到了認可。然而，看過了燈紅酒綠，了解了Runway殘酷的生存規則后，Andy卻深陷困惑?；爻痰能嚿?，與Miranda的一段對話，確切的說，是在聽過Miranda的一段獨白后，Andy突然醒悟，終于明白什么樣的生活才是自己想要的，才是最適合自己的。

Miranda: You thought I didn't know.
I've known what was happening for quite some time. It just took me a little while to find a suitable alternative for Jacqueline. And that James Holt job was so absurdly overpaid...that, of course, she jumped at it.
So I just had to tell Irv that Jacqueline was unavailable.
The truth is, there is no one that can do what I do...including her. Any of the other choices would have found that job impossible...and the magazine would have suffered.
Especially because of the list. The list of designers, photographers...editors, writers, models, all of whom were found by me, nurtured by me...and have promised me they will follow me...whenever and if ever I choose to leave Runway.
So he reconsidered.
But I was very, very impressed...by how intently you tried to warn me.
I never thought I would say this, Andrea...but I really...I see a great deal of myself in you.
You can see beyond what people want and what they need...and you can choose for yourself.
Andrea: I don't think I'm like that. I... I couldn't do what you did to Nigel, Miranda. I couldn't do something like that.
Miranda: Mm. You already did. To Emily.
Andrea: That's not what I... No, that was... that was different. I didn't have a choice.
Miranda: Oh, no, you chose. You chose to get ahead. You want this life, those choices are necessary.
Andrea: But what if this isn't what I want? I mean, what if I don't wanna live the way you live?
Miranda: Don't be ridiculous, Andrea. Everybody wants this. Everybody wants to be us.

在得知Miranda將被裁撤的消息后，Andy迫不及待地想辦法通知她，其實，Mrianda has known what was happening for quite some time. Quite some time 相當于quite a long time，也就是“相當長一段時間”。比如，I haven't seen you for quite some time. 好久沒有見到你了。

對于Miranda來說，需要做的不過是花點兒時間給另一個人找到一個suitable alternative, 合適的替換位置。alternative，選擇，選擇的自由，選擇的余地。比如：If you don't like the school lunch, you have the alternative of bringing your own. 要是你不喜歡學校準備的午餐,你可以自己帶飯。

對于一個so absurdly overpaid job，absurdly荒唐地；overpaid，多付款的，也就是一個酬金高的離譜的工作，那個人一定會jumped at it. jump at “欣然接受，急切地抓住”。比如：He took a running jump at stock exchange and make no money on it. 他急急地去炒股票，一點錢也沒賺到。You should have jump at such a good chance. 這樣的好機會， 你應該抓住。從Miranda的選詞上大家可以感覺的到她對對話中的Jacqueline是反感的。

Miranda隨后告訴了Andy自己之所以沒有被換掉，是因為手中有一個足以要挾老板的名單，里面都是愿意跟隨她同時離開的設計師，編輯等等。因為有了這個，老板才決定reconsidered. 大家對以re為前綴的單詞都不陌生了。這個前綴表示“再，又，重來”。再比如，restart，重新開始; reborn重生等等。

盡管Miranda足以自救，但內心還是對Andy急切的要幫助她有些感動。并且難得的說了句比較感性的話。I see a great deal of myself in you. 這句話不難理解，我能在你身上看到很多自己的影子。也就是她們有很多相似之處。

Miranda的話非但沒有讓Andy沾沾自喜，反而極度困惑起來，她不認為自己和Miranda是一類人，特別是在看到Miranda為了保全自己，而犧牲了Nigel的夢想之后。

Miranda的判斷也并非毫無依據，因為在努力適應助理工作的過程中，想要證明自己的一個途徑，就是要比別人做的更好。所以不管有意無意，都會以挫傷另一個另一些人為代價。所以，Miranda在Andy提出質疑后，說到：You chose to get ahead. Get ahead，“取得進步；超過”。再比如：Decide what you need to learn to get ahead. 想象為了領先一步你要學點什么。A man has to strike out for himself if he wants to get ahead. 一個人要想出人頭地，就得自己去打天下。

Andy對Miranda給自己的評價并不認同，但是卻無法清晰的表達自己的想法，所以，接下來的兩個句子里，Andy使用了兩個what if 引導的從句。What if “如果……將會怎么樣”，一個比較常用的句式。比如：But what if several blows land at the same time? 然而，假如多重打擊同時不期而至呢？What if the US unemployment rate rises above 10 per cent and stays there for an extended period? 如果美國失業率升至10%以上、并長期保持在這一水平，結果將會怎樣？

這兩個假設，其實是Andy自己在問自己。是啊，還有誰能比自己更清楚內心的追求和渴望呢？想明白，只需要剎那，推開車門，Andy扔掉了手機，毫不猶豫的選擇離開。電影最后，她的前任Emily拄著拐杖重新回到Runway。每個人都有自己追逐的目標。Andy無法接受，不愿適應的規則未必就是錯的，也未必不適合其他人。就看你是不是明白 什么才是自己追求的，能令自己快樂的了。好了，和Andy揮手道別吧，另一位職場新鮮人在下一期等著我們。
