179.Initiation, Pt. 1
179.人會(huì)（1）
"If you want to be part of this fraternity, put it on paper!" one boy said.
"如果你想成為大學(xué)生聯(lián)誼會(huì)的一份子，把它寫下來(lái)！" 一個(gè)男孩說(shuō)。
"We will put you through your paces to see if you are worthy,
"我們會(huì)測(cè)試你的本領(lǐng)，看你是否優(yōu)秀，
but don't worry we won't do anything that will put you to death!"
不過(guò)別擔(dān)心，我們不會(huì)要你命的！"
They all smiled. Initiation was always such fun!
大家都笑了。入會(huì)總是這么好玩兒！
"Put your mind at rest!" I said to my friend. They're just joking.
"放心！"我對(duì)我的朋友說(shuō)。"他們只是在開玩笑。
They want to see us put our best foot forward and be brave. That's all!"
他們想看到我們?nèi)σ愿啊⒂峦鼻啊Ｈ绱硕眩?quot;
"I know, I know," my friend said as he put his hands in his pockets.
"我知道，我知道。"我朋友說(shuō)，他把手伸入口袋。
"But I've put on some weight lately. I think I'm the fattest one here! You know how they hate that!"
"可我最近長(zhǎng)胖了一些。我想我是這兒最胖的了！你知道他們多么不喜歡胖子！"
"Don't let it put you out! Besides, you can't back out now, you're the one who put me up to this in the first place!"
"別讓這件事使你不安！再說(shuō)，你現(xiàn)在不能打退堂鼓，是你首先煽動(dòng)我搞這些鬼把戲的！"
"Sorry," he replied. "But I can't put my finger on it! Something doesn't feel right!"
"對(duì)不起。他回答道。"可我說(shuō)不清楚。總覺(jué)得有點(diǎn)不對(duì)勁兒！"
"Put it off until tomorrow. If they see you making those faces you'll put yourself out of the whole thing before we even begin!
"把這事兒推遲到明天吧。如果他們看見你做那樣的鬼臉，我們還沒(méi)來(lái)得及開始，你就要出局了！
And put these things away!" I said as I quickly put his mini camera and tape recorder back into his bag!
把這些東西收起來(lái)！"我說(shuō)著，趕緊把他的微型照相機(jī)和錄音機(jī)放回他的包里！
I was almost put out with him; he was being such a baby, putting on such a fuss! But he was my friend after all.
我差點(diǎn)和他一起完蛋，他既幼稚，又添亂！可他畢竟是我的朋友。
And I could understand his fears. I was just a little bit nervous myself!
我可以理解他的恐懼。我自己也有些緊張！
But what could be so bad about an initiation ceremony?
可還有如此糟糕的人會(huì)儀式嗎？
