107.To Give or Not to Give
107.給還是不給
As Joe walked down the street he passed an old man sitting in the gutter.
喬沿街而行的時(shí)候經(jīng)過(guò)了一個(gè)坐在貧民區(qū)的老人。
"Spare some change?" the old man said, asking Joe for a hand out.
"給點(diǎn)兒零錢(qián)吧？"老人說(shuō),求喬給他一點(diǎn)施舍。
And even though Joe had a handsome salary and was earning bonuses hand over fist, he was hard put to it to give him anything.
盡管喬拿著很高的薪水，而且很容易就能得到許多獎(jiǎng)金，卻為給他錢(qián)的事兒犯難了。
But then he looked at the old man's clothes; they were obviously hand-me-downs from other people and his life was hanging by a thread.
不過(guò)這時(shí)他看了一眼老人的穿著，他穿的顯然都是別人送的衣服，他的生命也危在旦夕。
"Well, I just happen to have a twenty dollar bill here!" Joe said.
"哎呀，我這里碰巧有一張20元的鈔票！"喬說(shuō)。
"Eh?" the old man said, indicating that he was hard of hearing.
"嗯？"老人說(shuō)，聽(tīng)上去像是耳朵有點(diǎn)兒背。
Joe pulled out the twenty, didn't say anything more and showed it to the old man.
喬拿出那20元錢(qián)，沒(méi)有再說(shuō)任何話(huà)，只是把錢(qián)給老人看。
"I have twenty dollars!" Joe said loudly.
"我有20元錢(qián)！"喬大聲說(shuō)道。
The old man pricked up his ears, hanging on Joe's words.
老人豎起耳朵認(rèn)真聽(tīng)著喬的話(huà)。
"Are you going to hang on to it?" the old man said.
"你準(zhǔn)備緊緊抓住不放嗎？"老人說(shuō)。
"Or do you want me to do something for it? Don't be hard on me. I could really use it!"
"還是你想要我做點(diǎn)什么？別讓我難受了。我真的需要錢(qián)！"
"No, no. It's yours!" And Joe gave the man the twenty dollars. "Here!"
"不，不。這錢(qián)是你的了！"喬把20元錢(qián)給了老人。"拿著！"
The old man took the money and said 'That's the most anyone has ever given me, hands down!
老人接過(guò)錢(qián)說(shuō)："還沒(méi)有人給過(guò)我這么多錢(qián)，毫無(wú)疑問(wèn)！
Thanks for sparing a bit of your hard earnings.
謝謝你把你辛苦掙來(lái)的錢(qián)分給了我一點(diǎn)。
I promise my drinking ways will be hung up and I'll turn over a new leaf!"
我保證我將停止酗酒，重新做人！"
Joe smiled and walked away. He didn't even have any hard feelings about losing the twenty.
喬笑著走開(kāi)。對(duì)于失去那20元錢(qián)他甚至都沒(méi)有一點(diǎn)反感情緒。
Now if he could just find a way to hand in a receipt for it so that he could get reimbursed at work for charitable giving ...
要是他能想辦法交張發(fā)票上去，他的慈善之舉在工作中能得到欣慰就好啦……
