62.系內沖突
When the department chair began to deduct wages from Professer Jones, he departed from a longstanding tradition of not punishing faculty for their indiscretions.
當系主任開始扣瓊斯教授的工資時，他便打破了不因言行失檢而懲罰教師的慣例。
Other departmental staff quickly began to depict the chair as having his own design to take control of the department, saying that he was being too hard on staff.
系里其他教職工很快開始把他描述成帶有想控制整個系的個人目的，說他對教職工太嚴厲了。
Formal complaints soon followed.
接著便出現了正式投訴。
As the department chair himself came under scrutiny, being investigated by a team sent from the highest levels of the university, he suddenly needed to depend on the very staff that he had abused to defend himself!
隨著系主任自己受到審查——學校髙層專門派了一個小組對他進行調查，他突然需要依靠那些他曾經傷害過的教師為他進行辯護！
They descended from their offices, however, to delight in not backing up his defense!
但是，他們從辦公室下來就是為了袖手旁觀并以此為樂！
They watched him sweat, in fear now himself of losing his own job!
他們看著他滿頭冒汗，看著他自己現在也為飯碗不保而擔心受怕！
The whole scene could be described as one of revenge!
整個場面可以描述成一個復仇的場面！
And whereas the department chair had previously dedicated himself to making life hell for his staff, exposing every defect in every person, they now were returning the favor!
以前是系主任想辦法把員工們的生活變成地獄，他會揭露每個人身上的缺點，而現在他們在回報他的“特殊 照顧” ！
He was deprived of all support!
他失去了所有人的支持！
Realizing that he had been beaten in his own game, the department chair deferred to the investigators for their final decision.
系主任意識到他在自己的游戲里玩輸了，所以只好服從調查人員的最后決定。
When they cleared him of all charges, everyone gasped!
讓大家直喘氣的是，他們宣布所有對他的指控都不成立！
The chair smiled, while the staff defined it as a cover-up, a sham，a scandal!
系主任笑了，員工們卻把事件定義為掩蓋事實、弄虛作假、丟人現眼！
No, the investigators said, it was none of that.
不對，調查人員說,你們說的都不對。
But if they had derived anything from their investigation, it was that there was much personal reconciliation needed before the department would ever be successful again.
但如果說他們從調査中得到了什么， 那便是重振這個系之前要做很多個人之間的調解。
And they would be watching.
他們將密切關注事態的發展。
Then the healing began.
接著傷口的愈合就開始了。
