61.失去的女朋友
Mark was in his apartment day in and day out, waiting for his girlfriend to call.
馬克每天都在他的公寓里等他女朋友的電話。
Well，at least he thought she was his girlfriend.
至少他認(rèn)為她是他的女朋友。
She was his dead to rights, he told himself!
他告訴自己她奄無疑問是他的女朋友！
But still she didn't call.
可她就是不來電話。
As he dashed off each afternoon after work, his friends began to worry.
看到他每天下午下班后迅速離開，他的朋友們開始擔(dān)心起來。
But Mark wouldn't listen, he had decided on waiting and that was what he was going to do.
但是馬克是不會聽的，他已經(jīng)決定等待，而且他準(zhǔn)備非等不可。
And so he sat by the phone day after day.
就這樣他日復(fù)一日地守在電話旁。
He declined invitations to see movies, to go to a bar, to even go on a date.
他拒絕別人請他看電影、去酒吧，甚至拒絕與別人約會。
He even took a day off from work to sit by the phone.
更有甚者，他還請了一天假坐在電話邊。
And when he sat by the phone it was as if he was dead to the world!
而坐在電話邊的時候，他好像對外界失去了知覺！
Then his friends paid him a visit to comfort him.
于是他的朋友們上門來安慰他了。
He had to deal with reality and admit that she wouldn't call，they said.
他得面對現(xiàn)實，承認(rèn)她不會打電話的事實，他們說。
If she hadn't called after all this time of Mark waiting by the phone, day and night, then she was never going to call.
如果馬克日日夜夜在電話旁等了那么久，她還是不打電話來，那她就永遠(yuǎn)不會來電話了。
Mark had to get back to day-to-day living and forget about her.
馬克必須回到日常生活，把她給忘了。
Mark's best friend even said that Mark should write his own personal Declaration of Independence from this girl and move on!
馬克最好的朋友甚至還說，馬克應(yīng)該向這個女孩寫一份自己的《獨立宣言》,并繼續(xù)走自己的路！
They finally convinced Mark that he had deceived himself into thinking she was his girlfriend and his alone.
他們終于讓馬克相信，他是自己欺騙自己，認(rèn)為她是他的女朋友，而且只能是他的女朋友。
He stopped waiting by the phone.
他不再守在電話邊了。
Two weeks later, when Mark bumped into an old friend who dealt in antique furniture, he learned that his girlfriend had been in an accident!
兩周之后，馬克偶然碰到了一位經(jīng)營古家具的老朋友，他得知他的女朋友出了車禍！
She had been dead and buried for a month!
她入土為安已經(jīng)一個月了。
Mark looked at the calendar and he saw that her death dated back to the exact day when he had started waiting for the phone to ring!
馬克看了看日歷，發(fā)現(xiàn)她出事的日子正好可以追溯到他開始等電話響起的那一天！
She had died as his girlfriend!
她是作為他的女朋友死去了！
