59.逃跑
When they had reached a critical point along the river, Catherine finally broke down and cried crocodile tears.
當(dāng)她們沿著河邊到達(dá)臨界點(diǎn)的時(shí)候，凱瑟琳終于支撐不住，掉起鱷魚眼淚來(lái)。
"Come on, Catherine. Don't cry over spilled milk! We can make it across.

I studied the cross sections of this part of the river before we were captured.
被抓之前我研究過(guò)這塊地方的斷面圖。
I know where it's shallow," Martiia said.
我知道什么地方水比較淺。"瑪莎說(shuō)。
Martha helped Catherine stand up. It wasn't so cut and dried crossing the river, however.
瑪莎扶凱瑟琳站了起來(lái)。但是，過(guò)河的事并不是那么事先準(zhǔn)備好的。
Crowding out fears of drowning, they tried to cut across the river until the water was up to their shoulders.
她們排除掉可能被淹死的恐懼，試著抄近路過(guò)河，直到水沒到她們的肩膀。
That's when the water finally swept them away.
就在這時(shí)她們終于被水沖走了。
It never crossed their minds that they would survive, but after the river culminated in a small waterfall, the girls were able to crawl out on the other side.
她們永遠(yuǎn)都沒有想到她們會(huì)死里逃生，可是當(dāng)河水在一處小瀑布形成最高點(diǎn)之后，姑娘們得以從河對(duì)面爬出來(lái)。
"But how will we find a boat to cross the lake?" Catherine asked.
"我們?nèi)绾尾拍苷业酱^(guò)這個(gè)湖呢？"凱瑟琳問(wèn)。
"Let's cross that bridge when we come to it.
"船到橋頭自然直。
First we have to get through this next jungle!"
首先我們得設(shè)法穿過(guò)下面這個(gè)叢林！"
The next day, back in the village by the lake, the main hall was crowded with the rest of the team.
第二天，她們回到了湖邊的村莊，大廳里擠滿了其他小組成員。
But they didn't know the girls had been kidnapped. Instead they were angry that they weren't there.
但他們不知道姑娘們被綁架了，相反還為她們的缺席而生氣。
They were just crossing their names off the list of research students to present their ideas for new classes to the curriculum committee, when a voice cried them down!
他們正準(zhǔn)備把她們的名字從研究者名單上劃掉，取消她們向課程委員會(huì)就新課設(shè)備的事提意見的資格，這時(shí)一個(gè)聲音喊叫著不讓他們講下去！
"Stop!" Martha yelled. "Don't cross us out yet! We're back!"
"等一等！ "瑪莎喊道。"先別開除我們！我們回來(lái)了！"
And then she explained to everyone where they had been.
接著她向大家解釋她們?nèi)チ四睦铩?/div>
They didn't believe her at first, but when no one could cure Catherine of the shakes, they noticed that she was traumatized.
開始他們還不信，但是看到誰(shuí)也消除不了凱瑟琳的顫抖，他們發(fā)現(xiàn)她受了很大的精神打擊。
Then they were amazed that the girls had escaped and made it back alive!
這時(shí)他們才吃驚地了解到姑娘們?cè)瓉?lái)確實(shí)是死里逃生！
