第一課 新來的家伙
William C. Reilly always thought that he was a big shot!
威廉C賴?yán)傉J(rèn)為他是個(gè)大人物！
When Marcus Trubody came in for a bite to eat, however, everyone felt that it was like a breath of fresh air.
然而當(dāng)馬庫(kù)斯特魯博迪進(jìn)來吃一點(diǎn)兒東西時(shí)，大家都覺得是一種新鮮的刺激。
William pretended it was no big deal, but then he saw things that were a bit of a shock.
威廉假裝沒有什么大事，可后來他卻發(fā)現(xiàn)了一些有點(diǎn)兒讓人吃驚的事情。
First, a couple of kids who usually ran when they saw him, walked right past him.
首先，幾個(gè)從前一看見他就跑的孩子這次從他身邊走了過去。
Then, when he was waiting in a blind alley for townsfolk to greet him, no one appeared.
然后，當(dāng)他在一條死胡同等著市民跟他打招呼時(shí)，卻沒一個(gè)人出現(xiàn)。
William just stood there in the dark, where no beam of light could enter.
威廉就那么一直在黑暗中站著，那里一束光都進(jìn)不來。
Finally, when the local clock watcher failed to tell the time as William walked by, William knew that he had to fight this break with tradition.
最后，當(dāng)威廉經(jīng)過時(shí)當(dāng)?shù)啬莻€(gè)老是看中等待下班的工人卻說不出時(shí)間來，這是威廉才明白他必須與這種背離傳統(tǒng)的事情作斗爭(zhēng)。
Five minutes later, William burst into the cafe like a blast of wind.
五分鐘后，威廉像一陣風(fēng)似地跑進(jìn)了咖啡館。
Marcus didn't even flinch.
馬庫(kù)斯甚至都沒有退縮，
Instead he picked up the bundle of papers and prepared to leave.
相反他拿起一包文件準(zhǔn)備離開。
"I sense a cloud of frustration," he said to the town clerk. "I need a change of pace. I heard there was a big sale next door. I'll be over there if anyone needs me."
" 我感覺很失望，" 他對(duì)這城市職員說道。" 我需要改變一下節(jié)奏。我聽說隔壁正在大減價(jià)。如果有人需要我，我這就過去。"
"There won't be anyone needing you any more," William said.
"不會(huì)在有人需要你啦！" 威廉說。
That was when a sudden column of water flew on to William.
就在這時(shí)的突然有束水柱飛到了威廉身上。
He fell to the ground, knocking down a cluster of grapes.
他倒在地上，打掉了一串葡萄。
Stunned, he looked up to see Marcus Trubody over him.
震驚之余，她抬頭看見馬庫(kù)斯特魯博迪在他上面。
"I got a bunch more where that comes from!" Marcus said. " I don't take kindly to threats. But I'm building a crew of roughnecks to work with me.You're welcome to join."
" 剛才出來的那種東西我還有一串呢！" 馬庫(kù)斯說。" 我不喜歡被人威脅。我正在發(fā)展一幫流氓跟我一起干，歡迎你的加入。"
Still surprised and wet, William realized that he was a babe in arms compared to Marcus Trubody.
驚魂未定，渾身是水的威廉意識(shí)到和馬庫(kù)斯相比，他不過是個(gè)涉世未深的人。
He stood up, extended his hand and said, " Welcome to town. Let's hear about that offer!"
他站起來，伸出手說道："歡迎來到城里，讓我們來聽聽那個(gè)提議！"
