１．詞義的選擇

英漢兩種語言都有一詞多類和一詞多義的現象。翻譯時首先應該根據句法結構判明一個詞在原句中屬于哪一詞類，然后進一步確定詞義。

如英語的record可作動詞，也可作名詞：

I record all my thoughts in a notebook. （動詞）

我在筆記本上記下我所有的想法。

I'll bring you some records next time. （名詞）

下次我給你帶一些唱片來。

漢語的“書”字，既可作名詞，也可作動詞：

你讀過多少書？（名詞）

How many books have you read?

振筆直書。（動詞）

Take up the pen and write vigorously.

即使詞類不變，一詞多義也是很常見的。因此，譯者在確定詞類的基礎上，應根據上下文來確定其確切的含義。越是簡單的詞，其釋義和搭配越多。如take，在《英漢大詞典》里，僅作為及物動詞就有37項釋義，作為不及物動詞有15項，作為名詞有12項，再加上幾十個搭配詞組就更多了。在《現代漢語詞典》中，“走”字的釋義有9項，搭配詞組有61項。

現以英文的help作動詞為例，看看在不同的上下文里會有多少不同的譯法：

He helped sweep the floors of the waiting rooms.

他幫助打掃了候車室。

The government needs to help the needy.

政府要救濟窮人。

Trade helps the development of industry.

貿易促進工業(yè)的發(fā)展。

I couldn't help crying.

我忍不住哭了。

This organization may be able to help you with such information.

這個組織也許能為你提供這類信息。

Maybe it would help if you took some adult education courses.

你要是學點成人教育課程也許會有好處。

This room is so depressing — I suppose new curtains would help.

這房間讓人覺得壓抑——我想換上新窗簾會覺得好些。

I helped Oakley inside.

我扶奧克利走進去。

Can you help me with this case please?

請幫我抬一下這箱子好嗎？

Can I help you to some more meat?

給你再來點肉好嗎？

Mr. Stokes helped himself to some more rum.

斯托克斯先生又自己動手斟了些朗姆酒。

He's been helping himself to the contents of the till again!

他又在偷賬臺抽屜里的錢了！

Humor often helps a tense situation.

幽默常能緩和緊張局面。

A: Do you let your holiday cottage?

B: Oh yes, it helps with the upkeep.

甲：你出租你的度假別墅嗎？

乙：是啊，這樣可以貼補房屋的保養(yǎng)費。
