Message from Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of UNESCO, on the Occasion of World Art Day
15 April 2024
As the German artist Paul Klee said, “art does not reproduce the visible, but makes it visible”. Art, in all its forms, gives us a different way of seeing, hearing and understanding the world.
It is for this reason that on World Art Day (WAD) 2024 we wish to celebrate the arts in all their diversity and remind people of the importance of the arts in building peaceful societies. This is also one way in which UNESCO, the United Nations agency for art and artists, supports the arts.
First and foremost, at UNESCO, we promote education about the arts and education by means of the arts, enabling students to develop emotional intelligence, creativity and critical thinking and to learn to value otherness from an early age. Thus, this past February in Abu Dhabi, UNESCO’s Member States adopted the new Framework for Culture and Arts Education, with a view to making it central to teaching methods.
Our Organization is also working to make the arts central to cities and to the development of societies, notably through the UNESCO Creative Cities Network, which consists of 350 creative cities, 55 of which joined the network last year. These cities, in over 100 countries, undertake to promote culture and art in all their forms: handicrafts and folk art, digital arts, design, film, gastronomy, literature and music.
Supporting the arts also means recognizing the diverse artistic expressions which enrich humanity, as demonstrated by the 730 cultural elements, in 145 countries, which are on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. In 2023, 55 new elements were added to the Representative List. UNESCO will help to safeguard and pass them on to future generations to enable their renewal and reinvention.
This is why it is so important to protect art under all circumstances, especially in emergencies. This principle is at the core of the UNESCO-Aschberg Programme for Artists and Cultural Professionals, which is intended to protect the status and livelihoods of artists and cultural professionals. We raised this very issue at United Nations Headquarters in New York on 9 April, and we will be raising it again at the Venice Biennale on 18 and 19 April through the dedicated pavilion we are setting up there with the Finnish NGO Artists at Risk.
We also work to protect heritage and works of art in times of conflict. This is a long-standing commitment, which we will be celebrating this May in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, on the 70th anniversary of the Convention for the Protection of Cultural Property in the Event of Armed Conflict (1954).
On World Art Day 2024, UNESCO is thus calling on us all to unite around art, just as we are invited to do by the tapestry Airplanes and Angels by Romanian artist Mircea Cantor. Last October, this piece was added to Headquarters’ collection of works by the greatest artists of the twentieth century. Because at UNESCO, aware of the value of art, we have a vast collection of works – over 1,800 pieces – inviting us to go on an ever-renewed journey beyond time and place.
