As an Italian-born Indian politician, Sonia Gandhi is president of the Indian National Congress, one of the major political parties of India. She is the widow of former Prime Minister of India Rajiv Gandhi. Although she is actually the fifth foreign-born person to be the leader of the century-old Congress Party, she is the first one since India’s independence in 1947.

Sonia Gandhi loves traditional Indian wear, but follows the dress code of "less is more." She was fascinated by her mother-in-law Indira Gandhi's "innate sense of fashion" and praised her by saying "her unique sense of fashion and the simplicity of her elegance were admired across the world."
